Blog Tour: Loving Summer by Kailin Gow--Interview!

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your book, Loving Summer.

Well...I'm Kailin Gow and my favorite colors are red for boldness, passion, and female strength;  black for mystery; and any shade of purple for creativity.

I love what I do, and that is being a storyteller through books, audio, and film.

Loving Summer is my newest contemporary romance (with an edge) that is about first loves, first experiences, friendship, family, and finding oneself.

2. What was the writing process like for Loving Summer.

Very smooth without any hiccups.  The characters were very clear for me, especially Summer, Aunt Sookie, Astor Fairway, and the Donovans. And the beach house pretty much brought everything together because once everyone was there, the entire feeling of being there, being with Summer, Sookie, Astor, and the Donovans at the beach house became so strong, clear, and real for me.

I had already had this concept of wanting to write something based on when I was growing up and a particular incident in my life where I knew a family consisting of a mom and her two boys and daughter who was going through this rough period in their lives.  It was a matter of tapping into my feelings and experiences at the time and going with the flow.

All my books stem from a personal experience, and Loving Summer was no exception.

For instance, my travel to Romania and visiting Dracula’s Castle and being asked by the locals to write a story about the real Vlad Dracul when I was 19, became the Stoker Sisters Series.  My encounters when I was 20 of a young demon exorcist/slayer became the inspiration for the Beautiful Beings Series, my loss of blood to the point of death after typical surgery at the hospital became the inspiration for the PULSE Vampire Series, my experience as a peer adviser for young women when I was in college coupled with my roommate’s intense romantic relationship with a flawed but wealthy and worldly young man while she was only a freshman in college, became the basis for Saving You Saving Me, and my own experience growing up spending summers with a family consisting of a single mother and her cute boys and daughter became the basis for Loving Summer.

3. Was there a specific song and/or play list you listened to and matched up to Loving Summer?

I listened to a few songs while working on Loving Summer...  Here's one of them, used in the Official Trailer:

Also, here's the playlist:

4. Is this a series, or a stand alone story?

Loving Summer is a series, and it's about Summer and the Donovans, and of course Aunt Sookie's Malibu beach house, which plays a significant role in the story. The next book after Loving Summer is Perfect Summer :D

Because Loving Summer also brings up issues about health, there is a full-length cookbook based on the book, too, called:  The Loving Summer Cookbook: Easy Recipes for Losing Weight and Getting Summer Healthy.

5. Can you share a teaser with our followers?

I look up, and my eyes happen to see the sea star on the wall. I find myself thinking back. I would have been… what? Eight? That’s right. I was eight, Nat was nine, and Aunt Sookie had taken all of us to Sea World in San Diego. There were sea stars in a tank, and I was watching them, reaching in after them for one of the biggest ones, wanting to know what it felt like.
I remember a bigger kid snatching it from my hands as I pulled it out of the water. “Little kids shouldn’t have sea stars,” he said.
            “Give it back!”
            “Make me.”
I remember him doubling up then, and Nat stepping past him, ready to hit him again. I remember him picking up the sea star and putting it in my hands.
