The Most Challenging Part About Creating Characters
For me, the most challenging part about creating unique characters is all in their head. People tend to speak in the same mannerism, use the same lingo and slang. But inside of our heads? Well, that’s a whole other story.
Trying to create an authenticity to each and every character that makes them stand out has been, and probably always will be, my biggest challenge. I think that every author worries about whether or not their characters sound too alike, or if all of their heroes are the same type of man. What if, with every book we write, we just do the same story of boy meets girl? What if we don’t stand out?
I try to have each of my characters have a trademark curse, or a trademark thought process. And in doing so, I hope that I make each character unique. Damon from On One Condition is charming and rarely loses his temper. Tony, from my upcoming Entangled release Divinely Ruined, is flawed and hot headed.
But, in the back of our minds, we always worry. Or, at least I do.
I can only hope that when a reader picks up On One Condition, that they walk away absolutely in love with Damon and Johanna. They have a lot of hard work to get to their happily-ever-after…but in the end, love conquers all.

OCD kindergarten teacher Johanna hates Valentine’s Day. She hates romance, hates commercialism, and definitely hates her school’s annual charity date auction. She never expects her pre-auction night of drinking to land a sexy Brit in her bed. Or for that Brit to show up at the auction, bid thousands just to talk to her again, and get down on one knee in front of everyone and ask her to marry him.
Viscount Damon Hayes has never met anyone like Johanna. She’s neurotic, fascinating, and fun. She also doesn’t care about his title and doesn’t want his money, which makes Johanna perfect to fulfill a surprise clause in his father’s will: marry within three months and remain married for a year, or lose his fortune. A relationship is out of the question, but when passions ignite and the two fall in love, their marriage of convenience becomes anything but.

Hi, happy weekend. I like romance where the girl meets the guy but normally it's a straight forward they date, fall in love, end of story. glad this one has some bumps along the way (well it sounds like it does). Something a bit different. thanks and please continue to write so i'll have something to read.

Love is never perfect, more of a precious, fleeting thing that you have to grab and hold on to and take care of it in order for love to grow. I can't wait to read this...

Sounds like a fun story. We all have those "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" moments. But sometimes they ust won't go away. And we all want a happy ending. Thanks for the giveaway. Can't wait to read this book.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute idea for a book! It's a rare romance that catches my eye, but this one sounds really good. Thanks for the giveaway!

Thank you SO much for hosting me, and good luck to all who enter!
ReplyDeleteOCD? That hits home for me; book sounds like a great read!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway! The book sounds really interesting and like there are a lot of laughs in it. I don't think you need to create characters with basically a catchphrase but they should be believable. I like the characters I read to be flawed yet still lovable? You're never going to meet a someone who is perfect so I shouldn't read about someone who is. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks you for bautiful post and intenetional giveaway.

I alway wonder about how authors come up with characters personality. To seem real they can't just what fits the story. It's nice to know it takes some work to get them right - that they don't just walk into your head complete.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway.

I thought this was a really interesting post! I'm not a writer, but I think coming up with interesting characters might be the hardest part. A great idea won't mean much if we don't fall in love the the characters. I really like the idea of creating a thought process for each of them, instead of just thinking of a character in terms of their traits.

I must agree with Diane; nice story must have a bunch of well-thought chara and it's all about their heads. I hate it when a heroine is really brave and then, suddenly, starts crying over something trivial...

I've always felt that a book that is character-drive is much more interesting than one that depends entirely on action. I want to be drawn into the novel and really care about the characters therein or the it won't matter what the happens to them at all! Thanks for this giveaway. I would be interested in seeing how you develop your characters!

I always fear creating flat characters, especially at the start of a story or series. But then it's fun to see them come to life in their own way. The fear of flatness never recedes, though. :-)
ReplyDeleteWell developed characters are what drives the story. You can have a brilliant story but without interesting characters no one is going to read it.
ReplyDeleteI love when my characters develops themselves, I have a somewhat idea of them, but they take the story other ways and that is just brilliant! I would love to read this as it sounds really interesting!

Boy meets girl? I for one can't get enough of these types of books. Especially if they have a unique touch to them. Marriage of convenience sure as heck is one.

I really like love stories where the couple have to work hard for it. It makes it more meaningful and heartwarming when they do find love. I'll be cheering on Damon and Johanna.

ReplyDeleteTHis book looks really good. And I love that's it 18+. It seems like everything is YA lately which is ok, but a woman still craves a little hot passion every now and then, and this sounds like just the right book for this woman. I can't wait to read it. Thanks for sharing the reccomendation with me, and I hope I win ;)!!

On One Condition sounds like an interesting mix of a variety of romance book standards. I also thought for a second that it was a time travel romance when I read the hero was a viscount. I've never seen that term used in a contemporary romance.

I love how you think about your characters. I completely agree we all tend to act/live in a kind of small set of social rules. But we all think about these rules/actions differently. Very interesting! On One Condition sounds awesome, thanks for the giveaway!
