Audio Book Review: Liesl & Po by Lauren Oliver!

Liesl & Po (Unabridged)
By Lauren Oliver
Illustrated by Kei Acedera
On Sale: 10/4/2011
Narrated by: Jim Dale
Length: 5 hrs and 55 mins

Liesl lives in a tiny attic bedroom, locked away by her cruel stepmother. Her only friends are the shadows and the mice - until one night a ghost appears from the darkness. It is Po, who comes from the Other Side. Both Liesl and Po are lonely, but together they are less alone.
That same night, an alchemist's apprentice, Will, bungles an important delivery. He accidentally switches a box containing the most powerful magic in the world with one containing something decidedly less remarkable.

Will's mistake has tremendous consequences for Liesl and Po, and it draws the three of them together on an extraordinary journey.

From New York Times best-selling author Lauren Oliver comes a luminous and magnificent novel that glows with rare magic, ghostly wonders, and a true friendship that lights even the darkest of places.

I was never really into audio books and didn't think I would like them. It wasn't until I got my first audio book for Christmas one year that I realized just how easy, and convenient it is to have an audio of your favorite book, or of any book period.

When I got the chance to review Liesl & Po in audio format, I was really excited. I really liked the way Jim Dale narrated the story. When I read the actual book by itself, I have to say I wasn’t really into it. I felt the characters really weren’t that exciting.

However, listening to the audio version made me enjoy the story a lot more. Jim Dale really brought the characters to life. I wasn’t really a fan of Po until I listened to this CD. He put a good deal of emphasis into each characters attitude. I listened to maybe three chapters a day and never really lost interest in the story.

I will admit that when I read the actual book, I couldn’t finish it. I just wasn’t really that into it, and I felt that for a middle grade book, it was a little too mature. But I did finish the audio book and now know how the story ends. I have to say I enjoyed it a lot more. I wish I would have finished reading the book in the first place now that I know how everything plays out.

Audio: 5 out of 5 Stars!
Story: 4 out of 5 Stars!

  1. I love how audio books sometimes make everything seem better. I feel like the books that I have listened to on audio have made the story better because of the way the voice actor is able to bring the characters to life.

I'm glad you enjoyed the story and I can't wait to read this one, although I might have to listen to the audio version instead!

Thanks for the great review. :)

  4. I've never read a book on audio before. I've heard one chapter of Graceling, and I thought it sounded a little awkward, and that it would sound better if I read the book and played it out in my head. Haha, now you make me want to try audiobook again.

I've heard of Liesl & Po a lot of times, but it doesn't look like my cup of tea. And since you said the characters weren't exciting, I guess I won't read it. :/

  8. I don't listen to many audiobooks as I'm a visual reader and like to read the words. However, I don't mind supplementing an audio book as part of the reading experience. I can read a book and later listen to an audio of it. Great review on the audio.

  9. I love the idea of Liesl friending a ghost. I think my son would like to listen to this in the car with me. Sounds like something we could both enjoy.
