BLOG TOUR: Whirl By Emma Raveling Excerpt + Giveaway

Seventeen-year-old Kendra Irisavie is an ondine, a water elemental caught in the middle of an ancient war. The Aquidae are immortal dark demons who will stop at nothing to destroy the fragile balance of the Elemental world. Fierce and independent, Kendra has always played by her own rules. Gifted with the powerful magic of Virtue and trained to be a deadly fighter, she has spent her life breaking hearts and getting into trouble. When her life explodes one violent night in a northern California city, a dark stranger appears, promising answers to her mysterious past. Alone and with no one to trust, she must now navigate through a dangerous new world, face the temptations of a forbidden romance, and remain true to her duty and destiny. All while the Aquidae continue to hunt her down, in the hopes of eliminating her forever… An edgy urban fantasy/paranormal romance, Whirl is recommended for older teens and mature readers due to strong language and mild sexual situations.

Whirl: Book excerpt
The following is an excerpt from Whirl. After being attacked by Aquidae demons, Kendra meets a selkie gardinel named Tristan who protects her from them.

“How’d you find me tonight?”
Aquidae used an ondine’s aura to spot and target them. Selkies were the only elementals who could also see the magical energy surrounding an ondine, making them uniquely qualified to be gardinels.
But Tristan had arrived at the alley a little too fast to be explained away by my glow.
He didn’t answer right away. His expression was inscrutable. I wondered how long gardinels had to train to have control over their faces like that.
“You have some special gardinel mojo I don’t know about?” I looked levelly at him. “Something that made you realize, ‘Oh hey, three Aquidae are attacking Kendra. I need to run into this particular alley and help her.’”
Tristan muttered something under his breath. It sounded like he was swearing in another language. He shot me an exasperated look.
“It was five.”
“What are you talking about?” I tensed.
“Five Aquidae attempted to attack you tonight,” he paused. “I staked two at the club before they could act. And then there were the three in the alley.”
Holy shit. Five of those nasties had been after me. An unnerving realization dawned. I hadn’t even known they were there.
And this guy, who looked like a ripped fashion model, had taken all of them out. Alone.
Then outrage kicked in.
“You’ve been following me,” I snapped.
His response was mild like it wasn’t that big of a deal. I muttered a sound of disgust under my breath.
The corner of his mouth twitched. “I killed five Aquidae who were after you tonight and that’s what bothers you?”

Emma Raveling is a fantasy author who leads a slightly eccentric life traveling throughout the world with her accommodating husband and charming, neurotic dog.

Hopelessly addicted to coffee and diet coke, she has a strange love of spreadsheets and organizational tools because they give her the illusion that she is somehow in control of the chaos that is her life. A dedicated practitioner of vipassana meditation, Emma loves to cook and often spends time scouring the Internet for new recipes. She adores beautiful art such as painting and sculpture, classical music, lyrical writing, and great graphic design.
