Review: The Defiant by Lesley Livingston

The Defiant by Lesley Livingston
SeriesThe Valiant #2
Publication: January 23rd, 2018

The darling of the Roman Empire is in for the fight of her life.

Be brave, gladiatrix… And be wary. Once you win Caesar’s love, you’ll earn his enemies’ hate.

Fallon was warned.

Now she is about to pay the price for winning the love of the Roman people as Caesar’s victorious gladiatrix.

In this highly anticipated sequel to THE VALIANT, Fallon and her warrior sisters find themselves thrust into a vicious conflict with a rival gladiator academy, one that will threaten not only Fallon’s heart – and her love for Roman soldier Cai – but the very heart of the ancient Roman Empire.

When dark treachery and vicious power struggles threaten her hard-won freedom, the only thing that might help the girl known as Victrix save herself and her sisters is a tribe of long-forgotten mythic Amazon warriors.

The only trouble is, they might just kill her themselves first.

"It saved our lives.
Legion tactics. I fervently ignored the irony."

While reading The Defiant, I couldn't help but think - this is all filler. When we get the final book, we may look back at this one and diagnose it with Middle Book Syndrome, but I don't even care because it's fantastic!

Things are going great for Fallon and crew - but that doesn't last long. And let's be honest, would it? Would it really? Do we really think their accomplishments would come without resistance?

I ADORE the world Livingston has created. The characters are so bad ass. I love that the romance was still there, but very much in the background. I love that these girls are so raw and determined. I even loved the twists and turns, though slightly predictable. I literally can't think of anything negative to say, which is rare for me 'cause I kind of have a knack for negativity.

This review is a difficult one because I want to gush, but I don't want to give too much away, and I certainly don't want to spoil The Valiant for anyone out there still on the fence. I loved The Defiant as much as I loved The Valiant, and I cannot wait for The Triumphant! All I can say is, READ THIS SERIES.
