As a general's daughter in a vast empire that revels in war and enslaves those it conquers, seventeen-year-old Kestrel has two choices: she can join the military or get married. But Kestrel has other intentions. One day, she is startled to find a kindred spirit in a young slave up for auction. Arin's eyes seem to defy everything and everyone. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him'with unexpected consequences. It's not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin. But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined.
Set in a richly imagined new world, The Winner's Curse is a story of deadly games where everything is at stake, and the gamble is whether you will keep your head or lose your heart.
MY THOUGHTS...
We have come to the end of The Winner's Curse read-along and I left feeling the same way I felt the first I read the book. I want, need, more! I absolutely loved it ten times more the second time around. It's funny how when you read a book for the second time you pick up on things you didn't the first time around. There was so much towards the end that I did not remember. I absolutely love Kestrel! I loved her before, but now she is definitely one of my favorite Female MCs.
In the last final chapters there is a lot more of Arin. You get inside his thoughts more, and find yourself struggling with him. He did not mean to fall for Kestrel, and he finds himself torn between doing what is right, continuing his plan, and at the same time protecting Kestrel. Not that she needs much protecting. The girl is SMART! Her father trained her well, and before she makes any move she puts a lot of thought into it, and makes sure her words aren't wasted.
She won't make a threat, or speak out of line unless she knows she can get away with it, or has something to back it up. Love her!!!
Sneak Peek of how kick-ass Kestrel is (I won't share any spoilers, or who she is talking to, no worries!)
"We're not done," he said.
"We are," said Kestrel, "unless you'd like to see how much my father taught me about unarmed combat. I'll drown you in that fountain. If I can't, I'll scream loud enough to bring every Herrani in this house running, and make them wonder what kind of man their leader is, that a Valorian girl so easily snapped his self-control."
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is all. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!
We're at the end and I am sad. I want to dive into the next book NOW.
