What some of my readers may not know about White Hot Kiss (WHK for short), it was probably my fourth or fifth book I’ve written, having written the book in January of 2011. I ended up shelving the book until it was sold to HQN Teen back in February of last year. Roth, one of the characters you do get to see in Bitter Sweet Love (BSL for short) and get to see a whole lot of in WHK was who I based Daemon Black from the Lux Series on.
Roth actually, and as can be seen in the first drafts of WHK, used to call Layla kitten.
Of course, Roth and Daemon are now two vastly different characters, but when people ask me who inspired Daemon Black, well you’ll about to meet him in WHK.
In BSL, you’re get an introduction to the world of Wardens and demons, where mankind are fully aware of the Wardens, which are more commonly known as gargoyles, but it’s also a love story between Dez and Jasmine, two characters who are also featured throughout The Dark Elements Series. You also get to meet Layla, Roth, and of course, Zayne.
WHK has been close to my heart for a very long time and I can’t wait to share more of the world with you in February. And I’m pretty sure you’ll never think of the song Paradise City the same way again either. =D
If you have any questions about Bitter Sweet Love or White Hot Kiss, and if I can answer them, post below and I’ll be popping in throughout the day to answer.
Gargoyles, such an interesting choice. Pretty sure I have not seen that particular thing approaches in YA yet. Why did you chose that creature?
ReplyDeleteMainly because no one really writes about them. And I also loved the Gargoyles cartoon when I was younger.
DeleteMainly because no one really writes about them and because I loved the cartoon Gargoyles growing up
DeleteWould love to read these books!!!
ReplyDeleteYay! More JLA! I can't wait to read these! :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any of these books yet, but I would love too. I love all your romance books. Question....do you have any quirks while writing??
ReplyDeleteI cannot write if someone is in the room with me.
DeleteDoes the Roth-Layla-Zayne love triangle have any similarities with the Aiden-Alex-Seth one? If yes, what are the said similarities? If not though, will it be more of a "love triangle" considering Layla will actually fall for both men?
ReplyDeleteIt's really nothing like Aiden, Seth, and Alex. And it's not what people think when the words love triangle pop in your head, but that's all I can say about that. =)
DeleteSince it's stated that there will actually be two guys, do you already know who Layla will actually end up with in the White Hot Kiss series? And is it going to be a full-blown love triangle? (Here's to hoping it's not though, as I and surely a LOT of other readers are not at all keen on love triangles and would want the heroine - namely Layla - to give her whole heart to only one guy -- namely Roth. Lol)
ReplyDeleteI think the whole love triangle thing is 50/50 with readers from what I've seen, but a love triangle has to be done well for it to be effective and not annoying. But as I've said, it's not what people think.
DeleteI would LOVE to win a copy. I am in the process of buying all of your books in paperback. So far I only have the Covenant Series. I have read the Lux Series on my Kindle, but NEED them in paperback.
ReplyDeleteI have never continuously read one Author, the way I have you. You are so diverse, and have amazing plots.
You come out with a new book every other month it seems. It really is amazing.
You might not want to answer this, but I have to ask. Do you ever get tired of writing?
So glad you enjoyed the books! I don't ever get tired of writing, because right now I'm supposed to be on a break from writing, but i started writing the next book due. It really is a passion and love for me, but there are times when it get's stressful b/c of deadlines and that can burn me out. So I am working on that next year, making sure I don't end up in the same boat as I did this year and last with cray cray deadlines
DeleteWhat would you say had been your inspiration for writing a book on the world of gargoyles? Any particular place, memory or thought?
ReplyDeletePS: am I the only TEAM ZAYNE in your whole fandom?! (i won't stop hoping even if I am~)
Just that it's a creature that hasn't been explored a lot and I was a fan of the cartoon. I don't think you're the only fan of Zayne. There's a lot of them at HQN.
DeleteThis series sounds like its going to be another hit! I am so far behind on JLA books yet I can't help myself and buy more of them or enter the giveaways :)
ReplyDeleteWill the love triangle continue through all three books? :( (I love that with Daemon and Katy, we get to see them actually be a couple, and I hate that love triangles take away from that aspect and also that the person is trying to choose between two people rather than giving his/her whole heart to one person.)
ReplyDeleteI've always give the couples time to be together, even if there is a love triangle or not.
DeleteWill it only be a trilogy? Because I remember when the Covenant series was only 4 books then it became 5. (I think the same might have happened with the Lux series too, but I can't quite remember.)
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to start this series!
naruto_and_hinata(at)hotmail(dot)com
Yep. I'm pretty sure (at this point) it will only be a trilogy
DeleteAfter reading Bitter Sweet Love, I am a little curious to know if you had a hard time putting into words the way your characters look when they shift into Gargoyle form? I know I have a hard time explaining things and always screw it up whenever I try to explain how I see it in my head. LOL!
ReplyDeleteTo me, explaining the way they shift between gargoyle form and human form was easy compared to explaining how it worked with the Lux series. I always had an idea of how the gargoyles looked to me, more human that creature. So it was fun when I first sat down to write one of them in their true form.
DeleteAfter reading Bitter Sweet Love and readingthe fir st chapter of white hot kiss it seemed like there was a time jump between them, was there and if so how long was it. Alsowill we see dez and jasmine aagain
ReplyDeleteYes.There is a time job. Layla is about 17 or 18 when White Hot Kiss starts and is all grown up. You will see Jasmine and Dez again and they play pretty big roles throughout the series.
DeleteYou've written A LOT in such a short amount of time... How do you switch between characters when writing books from one series, to another, to another, so quickly?
ReplyDeleteALSO- do you have a favorite book/world/character that youve created?? and why??
BTW- I LOVE all your books!!!! :)
I've been writing nonstop since 2007/2008 and so a lot of the books coming out back to back were written way long ago, but I do write a lot. Every day almost. I never write two books at once or do edits while working on a different book so that helps keep it separate in my head. I think the Dark Elements is probably my favorite world so far, because the gargoyles interact with humans and there's a lot of weird in the world--things I don't think people will expect, and it was fun creating it
DeleteI know there's Zayne and Roth, but I really hope we don't actually get a love triangle.
ReplyDeleteYou've said that Daemon Black is a bit like Roth, how can you describe Zayne as?
Daemon was actually based on Roth, but yeah, they are two different characters now. For those who've read White Hot Kiss, they kind of compare Zayne to Aiden. He's the strong and loyal type, pure and good to the core. He also shares a love for cookie dough with Layla, drives an Impala (Supernatural hint, hint) and he has a lot of responsibility on his shoulders. Needless to say, he's not a fan of Roth lol.
DeleteLOL, I'm not surprise he isn't. I'm sure they hate each other lol. I really can't wait to read this as you said it's not what people think it is (about the love triangle). Now I really want to know! I like Roth, by the way. ;)
DeleteSo what is Dez's completely unpronounceable name?
ReplyDeleteI can't even spell it. =)
DeleteIs Jasmines's sister going to be a problem to Layla? Seeing as how they both adore Zayne. I'm also confused about the ages. Layla was 13 in bitter sweet love and she's 17 in white hot kiss. But what is the age of Roth and Zayne? Are they the same age as jasmine? Because jasmine described Roth as being the same age as her. And I forgot Zayne's age, so yeah. :)
ReplyDeleteDanika is in White Hot Kiss, but there's not too much I can say about her or the ages of certain characters, b/c that's a wee bit spoilery, but Zayne is Danika's age.
DeleteI've only read one more series about Gargoyles, and I don't think I know of any more out there. I can't wait to dive into this world. :)
ReplyDeleteSooo since I can't think of any really good questions I'm gonna ask how are you liking the snow? Anddd does Layla change as a person from Bitter Sweet Love to White Hot Kiss because when we first meet her she is shy and skittish but now seems strong and confident. So if you can tell me without a spolier what made her change?
ReplyDeleteYes. Layla is very different from Bitter Sweet Love. She was very young and unsure in BSL, but has sort of grown up by the time White Hot Kiss starts off. Loving the snow. =)
DeleteSo what do you do if you get stuck? What do you do to start writing again?
ReplyDeleteFavorite scene to write in the Dark Elements series?
ReplyDeleteUm. Probably a certain scene in White Hot Kiss that involves Layla meeting three kittens
DeleteCan you tell us what Roth's new nick name for Layla is? Also do we get to see Roth hum more throughout the series, cause I thought that was a cute character trait.
ReplyDeleteI can't tell you what his nickname for is, but he does have one, and she doesn't like it. And yes, he hums a certain song throughout the series
DeleteI've read all of you're books and have Adored them ! i just read bitter sweet love on Sunday i Loved it ! I can't wait for White Hot Kiss SRSLY so excited !! my question is do you like putting similar physical traits with characters in you're other books like seth has amber eyes and Roth does well ? I CAN NOT WAIT FOR White Hot Kiss !!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you enjoyed. I don't know if it's that I liked to as so much as I can't help myself. There are certain physical traits I find interesting and appealing, so you'll see then pop up in different books.
Deletemy favorite couple of yours is katy and daemon. will this series give them a run for their money?
ReplyDeletefor readers who don't enjoy love triangles, will we be stressed during this series? you say it's not what we think, but..........
Oh yeah, it will give them a run for their money and then some. I can't answer the question about the stressed over love triangles, because I never stress over them, and that's really subjective. But like I've said, it's not what you think in White Hot Kiss.
Deleteif i can get picky.......
Deleteyou say "in white hot kiss"...... so can i ask..... will the "love triangle" situation be stretched through all three books or will there be some sort of resolution at the end of the first?
I'm only mentioning White Hot Kiss, because I'm not wanting to spoiling anything for the rest of the series.
DeleteIt seems like you are writing several series at once...plus you write on a lot of blogs and f.b., etc. How do you keep it all straight and do you write at weird times of the day/night or with music or anything else to keep you going?
ReplyDeleteI know that authors can sometimes come across an area where thy get stuck. I know I get stuck trying to write too but I always wonder how you do it considering you practically write at least 5 books a year. So with all those books, you're bound to become stuck at some point. What do you do when you reach a point in your book that you can't seem to work your way around yet you don't want to change anything either?
ReplyDeleteI've been debating about this for a while now, but I just have one question. Is this series going to be a lover triangle?
ReplyDeleteHonestly that question will depend on the reader. Some people will think there's one there. Other people will think there isn't.
DeleteSince there are a lot of questions about is there or isn't there a love triangle and will it continue on, etc. One thing to keep in mind, I write what I like to read, and love triangles, if done well, never have bothered me. At all. I've actually done a love triangle in one of my series before. But like I said, it isn't what people think. Will some people like one guy over the other? Sure. There are two main guys in the series. But that's all I'm going to say about that aspect. =)
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy all, your books, and my favorite series is whichever one I'm rereading:) My question is about Jasmine's ability to sense/smell demons. Is this significant to the story? To Jasmine's character?
ReplyDeleteIt's actually something all Wardens can do. They can sense out most demons. =)
DeleteWe see in the first chapter that Layla is attracted to the bad soul. Is she more interested in taking souls that are bad than good. Cause it was like she zeroed in on him when she saw him.
ReplyDeleteNot to give too much away, but she's drawn to the really bad souls and the really good, pure souls. =)
DeleteWas the research for this series tough? Were you able to put your own twist on the mythology?
ReplyDeleteVivien
kellis_amberlee at yahoo dot com
The toughest part was researching demon names. Their demons are ridiculous to spell and pronounce. So a lot of the demon names are "real" names and the gargoyle mythology, which is that stone creatures that ward off evil, is what I researched. The rest I made up.
DeleteI'm completely stoked to read this series! Which character would you say was your favorite to write about in this series? :)
ReplyDeleteYay! Most definitely Layla.
DeleteI cannot wait to read this series!! JLA you are one of my favorite authors of all time! Thanks for creating such awesome stories! oo and what inspired you to become a writer?
ReplyDeleteI've been waiting to read these books! Just finished the Lux series, which was amazing. Now I want to read about these gargoyles, something I don't think I have ever read about yet.
ReplyDeleteI would love to read this series. Sounds good. Thanks for the giveaway. Tore923@aol.com
ReplyDeleteSo, "not what people think". Do tell, or am I just going to have to find out for myself?
