Welcome to our stop on the Authors are Rockstars blog tour! Today we feature author of TAKEN, Erin Bowman.
I am super stoked that Erin Bowman is on this tour because Taken was one of my favorite books this year. It's a unique dystopian story filled with tons of action and romance that leaves you with goosebumps. Not only because of the fluffy stuff (LOL), but also because there is so much suspense you don't know who will survive or who won't.
Erin Bowman delivers an amazing story that kept me entertained from beginning to end. She deserves this title!
I’m a lover of stories. I write them, read them, watch them, discuss them, daydream about them, you name it. When I’m not living in fictional worlds, I tend to obsess over good typography (I was a web designer in my past life), drink tons of coffee, and spend a decent amount of time outdoors.
TAKEN just released in April, and it’s about a boy who grows up in an isolated community where all boys mysteriously vanish when they turn eighteen. The sequel, FROZEN, will be available 4/15/14.
My Harry Potter books are very well-loved. A few have cracked spines. The others are well on their way to breaking. And all of them have worn pages and faded dust jackets.
What do you normally like to read when not writing?
Anything and everything. I read both YA and adult, fiction and non. The only thing I try to limit is reading within the same genre as my current writing project. For example, if I’m spending my days drafting in a fantasy realm, I’ll keep a contemporary novel on my nightstand. The contrast is necessary or I start doubting my current work. (A draft always looks horrid when compared to a polished novel. And the trick is to not compare, period.)
The very talented Erin Fitzsimmons. She’s worked on some of my all time favorite YA covers.
What do you need to set the mood for you to write?
Coffee, headphones, and some epic instrumental music. Rain also helps, but I’m still trying to figure out how to control the weather.
How did you come up with your character’s name?
Gray is not the most virtuous person around. He sometimes makes bad decisions, does questionable things with even more questionable motives, but beneath that, he’s got a good heart. He values family and is loyal to them. He is a very muddy character, and I wanted his name to reflect that.

There are no men in Claysoot. There are boys—but every one of them vanishes at midnight on his eighteenth birthday. The ground shakes, the wind howls, a blinding light descends…and he’s gone.
They call it the Heist.
Gray Weathersby’s eighteenth birthday is mere months away, and he’s prepared to meet his fate–until he finds a strange note from his mother and starts to question everything he’s been raised to accept: the Council leaders and their obvious secrets. The Heist itself. And what lies beyond the Wall that surrounds Claysoot–a structure that no one can cross and survive.
Climbing the Wall is suicide, but what comes after the Heist could be worse. Should he sit back and wait to be taken–or risk everything on the hope of the other side?
