Review: Fire by Heather James

Fire
Author: Heather James
Published: January 5th, 2013
eBook: 202 pgs
Series: Elements of Power #1

Is control over the elements a gift, or a curse?

Roxy thinks that she is in control of everything: with flames flaring at her fingertips and an equally fiery attitude, what more could she need? But then she meets Brae, a prince from a rival Realm, who turns her assumptions of superiority upside down.

Jasmine has none of Roxy’s confidence or intensity. But she does have a secret - and Brae - and she’s not going to give either up willingly.

An exciting read that will have your nose glued to the book the entire time!

There were so many aspects I loved about Heather James' first book in the Elements of Power series. The first being that it wasn't clichéd. Normally, when you have a book that's going to use such a classic theme (humans who can control the elements -- fire, wind, water, air -- it can be easy to just do the same-old, same-old story lines or action sequences. What the author does in this book is unique, beautifully written and definitely unlike anything you've read so far.

The four tribes, with their four powers, are divided in such a way that you immediately want to choose a side. Now, please don't think Team Edward or Team Jacob, that's NOT what I mean! It's more like -- "what would I do if I could control the air" or "it would be so awesome to hold flames in my hands!" See the difference? You're not really choosing a side; you're imagining yourself having those powers because they are written so well in the book that you can visually see it in your mind.

One other aspect that Heather James works really well into this book is the two different perspectives of our main characters. When you go back and forth between two different view points, it can be so easy to have the characters sound the same or get lost as to where you are in the story. But not in Fire. Jasmine and Roxy are so different, and both very likeable -- it makes for a really engaging story that gives you a larger view of the world the characters are living in.

With the addition of mystery, suspense, action, and a small love story, I think this book is fantastic! It's a really great read and I can't wait for the next one :)

5 out of 5 stars
