Everything changed on The Day. The day the windows shattered. The day the power stopped. The day Dol's family dropped dead. The day Earth lost a war it didn't know it was fighting.
Since then, Dol has lived a simple life in the countryside -- safe from the shadow of the Icon and its terrifying power. Hiding from the one truth she can't avoid.
She's different. She survived. Why?
When Dol and her best friend, Ro, are captured and taken to the Embassy, off the coast of the sprawling metropolis once known as the City of Angels, they find only more questions. While Ro and fellow hostage Tima rage against their captors, Dol finds herself drawn to Lucas, the Ambassador's privileged son. But the four teens are more alike than they might think, and the timing of their meeting isn't a coincidence. It's a conspiracy.
INTERVIEW
Q: How did you come up with the idea of ICONS?
First, like always, there was a conversation with my husband, who’s basically my de facto writing partner. He was the one who said, “That should be a book,” which is sort of a critical moment in the process. After that, it was a matter of days before the first hundred pages of Icons came bursting out of me -- over one particularly gloomy weekend in Dijon, France with my oldest daughter. It was like a dam had broken, and there was no stopping it. I sent it off to my agent and said, “So this happened.” And there you go…
Q: Describe yourself in 3 words.
Antennae. Espresso. Doctor Who.
Q: Describe your main character in six words.
Sorrow. Strength. Compassion. Love. Hunger. Curiousity.
Q: What scene was your favorite to write?
There’s a scene where Dol, my main character, wanders through the Hole – futuristic LA – with Lucas, and most of it actually happened to me. The settings, anyways. I took my girls on a field trip to Los Angeles, which is where we actually live, and we stayed in a hotel downtown and explored a different side of the city. Chinatown, Olvera Street, Union Station, the LA Cathedral, the Griffith Park Observatory – all of that ended up in the book, and it’s sort of my love letter to my hometown.
Q: What scene was the hardest for you to write?
No one scene in particular -- but the revisions process in general always kills me. Especially when a book has flown out of me as organically and as quickly as this one did. Having to do the painstaking page-pedicure after that is soul destroying for me. I hate every minute of it. Survival of revisions always involves a whole lot of late night Netflix therapy…
Q: How different would you say the final version of ICONS is from the first draft?
The initial spirit is still there. The feel of it. Hopefully, everything else is much more polished!
Q: How did you come up with your character’s name?
My main characters are all Icon Children, which means they are types as well as individuals. Doloria Maria de la Cruz has a name that comes from the Latin word dolor, or sorrow. Furo Costas has a name that comes from furor, or rage. Tima Li comes from timor, fear. And Lucas Amare is amaros, love.
