Kara Magari is about to discover a beautiful world full of terrifying things--Ourea.
Kara, a college student still reeling from her mother's recent death, has no idea the hidden world of Ourea even exists until a freak storm traps her in a sunken library. With no way out, she opens an ancient book of magic called the Grimoire and unwittingly becomes its master, which means Kara now wields the cursed book's untamed power. Discovered by Ourea's royalty, she becomes an unwilling pawn in a generations-old conflict--a war intensified by her arrival. In this world of chilling creatures and betrayal, Kara shouldn't trust anyone... but she's being hunted and can't survive on her own. She drops her guard when Braeden, a native soldier with a dark secret, vows to keep her safe. And though she doesn't know it, her growing attraction to him may just be her undoing.
For twelve years, Braeden Drakonin has lived a lie. The Grimoire is his one chance at redemption, and it lands in his lap when Kara Magari comes into his life. Though he begins to care for this human girl, there is something he wants more. He wants the Grimoire.
Welcome to Ourea, where only the cunning survive.

Wow, the world building on this one was breathtaking. The world of Ourea is just full of so many things. Surprises are around every corner.
From the first few pages into this story, it was obvious that Boyce has a way with words.

Title: What the heck is a Grimoire? A guest post by fantasy author S. M. Boyce
Hey guys! I’m S. M. Boyce (call me Boyce)—fantasy author of the young adult Grimoire Saga. I’ve been invited over to chat about 5 things you can find in a grimoire, which is a powerful item and a focal point of my series (er…I guess that was last bit was obvious).
Quick rundown for those who don’t know: grimoires are the real deal. Through history, grimoires have served as manuals of sorts that a master makes for his apprentice. They hold the master’s secrets and act as a guide to the apprentice, answering questions when the master is no longer around to do so.
In the Grimoire Saga, I take that concept a step further. The Grimoire is basically the guidebook to a hidden world called Ourea, which is full of magic, incredible creatures, and a long history of betrayal. You can actually ask the Grimoire—a thousand-year-old book—questions, and the book will turn its own pages and give you an answer. It’s also a bit snarky.
So here are the top 5 things you’ll find in the Grimoire of my saga. Enjoy.
The Grimoire is host to the Vagabond: the spirit of a man who failed in his quest to unite the royalty of his time. What began as an attempt at a peaceful world actually killed him in the end. He can’t rest, and he becomes the mentor of whomsoever picks up the book next.
The problem? He uses that person to right the wrongs of his life—whether they like it or not.
The Grimoire is filled with answers to questions no one has thought to ask. It can bring peace or destroy kingdoms…it all depends on who wields it. A lot of lives can be saved with its magic, but just as many can be ended.
It’s possible to bring the dead back to life. How? Well, that’s something the Vagabond doesn’t want to share. The answer is in the book—if you ask the right question and don’t take no for an answer.
That’s the whole point of a grimoire, right?
If someone mentions a place you haven’t heard of before, the Grimoire can tell you about its history. It can even tell you about its people, their beliefs, and their grudges. If someone else mentions a term that doesn’t ring a bell, you can sit down and ask for a definition. Too embarrassed to ask why everyone seems to have a tattoo in Ourea? The Grimoire has an answer for you.
With the Grimoire, there really is no such thing as a stupid question.
Sometimes, we don’t really want an answer. Other times, there is no answer. So when all else fails, the Grimoire can at least point you in the right direction. Besides, knowing everything would be utterly dull. What’s life without a little adventure through the unknown?
