Help Me Decide What to Write in SURRENDER
A guest post by Elana Johnson
Okay, so it took me months of agonizing thought to come up with the little line I write in copies of POSSESSION.
See, I write “Dare to wish on stars!” because it took me a long time to get an agent and get published, and it was sort of inspirational on that level. Also, in POSSESSION, the main character Violet has a fond memory of wishing on stars with her father—and he tells her wishes don’t come true.
So I chose that line as a reference to me and publishing, and to the book as well, because Vi should dare to wish on stars, no matter what her dad says.
Now that SURRENDER is due to come out in less than three weeks, I am again in the same situation. I have no idea what to write when I sign books—something I have to do a lot during release week. (You can see my signings here!)
So in SURRENDER, there’s a song that Vi sings to Raine. In my head, the song is “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” but that’s not referenced in the book anywhere. I sort of want to do something with the song—because music is against protocol in Vi and Raine’s society.
The other main character is Gunner, and he’s a top-notch flier. So I’ve thought about using something about hoverboards or flying or the sky or high or some such in the book.
And Raine is always wearing gloves, so I thought about something with that…
And we get to see Jag again in SURRENDER, so I thought about something with that…
Okay, really, I haven’t thought very hard about this at all, and that’s why I’m freaking out.
So today, I’ve come up with some possibilities for what I could write in SURRENDER. And I want you to vote in the comments!
#1: Dreams really do come true.
#2: Way up high—that’s where you’ll find me.
#3: Trouble doesn’t melt like lemon drops in Freedom…
#4: Dance to your own beat.
#5: Be sure to bring your gloves.
#6: Jag says Welcome back! Or he would, if he could…
Oh my heck, I think these might be sooo lame. What do you think? Got anything better? Let the voting begin!

By Simon Pulse
Forbidden love, intoxicating power, and the terror of control…
Raine has always been a good girl. She lives by the rules in Freedom. After all, they are her father’s rules: He’s the Director. It’s because of him that Raine is willing to use her talent—a power so dangerous, no one else is allowed to know about it. Not even her roommate, Vi.
All of that changes when Raine falls for Gunner. Raine’s got every reason in the world to stay away from Gunn, but she just can’t. Especially when she discovers his connection to Vi’s boyfriend, Zenn. Raine has never known anyone as heavily brainwashed as Vi. Raine’s father expects her to spy on Vi and report back to him. But Raine is beginning to wonder what Vi knows that her father is so anxious to keep hidden, and what might happen if she helps Vi remember it. She’s even starting to suspect Vi’s secrets might involve Freedom’s newest prisoner, the rebel Jag Barque....
