Review: The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith

Who would have guessed that four minutes could change everything?

Today should be one of the worst days of seventeen-year-old Hadley Sullivan's life. She's stuck at JFK, late to her father's second wedding, which is taking place in London and involves a soon to be step-mother that Hadley's never even met. Then she meets the perfect boy in the airport's cramped waiting area. His name is Oliver, he's British, and he's in seat 18B. Hadley's in 18A.

Twists of fate and quirks of timing play out in this thoughtful novel about family connections, second chances and first loves. Set over a 24-hour-period, Hadley and Oliver's story will make you believe that true love finds you when you're least expecting it.

I had the distinct pleasure of reading this book during my two days of jury duty, and I could not have been happier! There were so many times that I was in near tears (happy tears) while reading this story, and I actually had to check myself and remember that I was in public!

The story follows two young teenagers on a plane ride to England (for two completely different reasons) and yet fate brings them together at just the right time. Sounds simple enough, right?

But there is so much more to this story. It is deep, personal, beautifully written and makes you truly believe that love at first sight is completely 100% statistically possible.

Many times, Hadley wonders what would've happened had she caught her plane on time. If she had never met Oliver at all. But by the end of this novel, I am so in love with the two of them as a couple, that I believe that fate would've found a way to bring them together some way or another. The chemistry is so strong and sweet that you can't help but root for them from the very beginning. Oliver's sense of humor keeps the book light-hearted and makes you smile the whole way through.

In the end, you don't get a clear idea of whether Hadley and Oliver will be together forever, but in the 24 hours that we watch them, you definitely believe that they have, as we have, fallen in love at first sight.

5 out 5 stars.

LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK!!!

  2. I have seriously been wanting this book since BEA blog reports. It sounds so good. The cover is awesome. I love to travel and always wonder who I'm going to meet on the way out. And who doesn't love the name Oliver? And he's British. Really? Good to hear that you liked it, and that the story will make us believe in love at first sight!
