"Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words." -Robert Frost
I have always been huge fan of poetry, ever since high school. Poetry is so beautiful and to me will never go out of style. And since authors now are mentioning poems in their books, I thought it might be fun to introduce this new meme to the blog. Every week, either myself or one of the other girls will post a poem of our choice. We will tell you why we picked it, and what it means to us. Also feel free to leave a comment telling us your own feelings about the poem, and if you want to recommend one to us as well.
The very first poem is 'Annabel Lee' by Edgar Allen Poe. I chose it because it is my all time favorite poem. Poe wrote a lot of dark material, but this poem is different. He wrote it for his wife, whom he loved deeply but tragically died young. His emotions are clearly laid out in his words, and his feelings for her speak volumes. I love this poem because when I read it I can picture the whole scene in my head. A beautiful girl, in a castle by the sea...Its almost like a fairy tale, but with a sad ending.
Annabel Lee
It was many and many a year ago,In a kingdom by the sea,That a maiden there lived whom you may knowBy the name of Annabel LeeAnd this maiden she lived with no other thoughtThan to love and be loved by me.
I was a child and she was a child,In this kingdom by the seaBut we loved with a love that was more than loveI and my Annabel LeeWith a love that the winged seraphs of heavenCoveted her and me.
And this was the reason that, long ago,In this kingdom by the sea,A wind blew out of a cloud, chillingMy beautiful Annabel LeeSo that her high-born kinsmen cameAnd bore her away from me,To shut her up in a sepulchreIn this kingdom by the sea.
The angels, not half so happy in heaven,Went envying her and meYes! that was the reason (as all men know,In this kingdom by the sea)That the wind came out of the cloud one night,Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.
But our love it was stronger by far than the loveOf those who were older than weOf many far wiser than weAnd neither the angels in heaven above,Nor the demons down under the sea,Can ever dissever my soul from the soulOf the beautiful Annabel Lee.
For the moon never beams without bringing me dreamsOf the beautiful Annabel Lee.And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyesOf the beautiful Annabel Lee.And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the sideOf my darling -my darling -my life and my bride,In the sepulchre there by the seaIn her tomb by the sounding sea.
~Edgar Allan Poe
Oh I love this one! And Poe in general. :D
ReplyDeleteI love all of Edgar Allen Poe's work, but, this poem and "The Raven", reign supreme. "The Raven" for its eerie and creepy nuances that chill you to the bone - and this, for its beautiful and rhythmic devotion to romance.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing this with us, Lisa! :)
I also love Poe, and "Annabel Lee" is just a beautiful poem. Like Enamored Soul, above, I love The Raven too. I also really like "Mirrors" by Sylvia Plath and "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by T.S. Eliot. Some of my favorites!
