Read-Along: The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski & Giveaway! #thewinnerstrilogy

Hey GCReaders!

Welcome to day one in the THE WINNER'S TRILOGY by Marie Rutkoski read-along!

I am super excited to be a part of this read-along since I am a huge fan of this series! Yes, I have read them both and devoured them! Now I am diving back into the both books and sharing my thoughts as I go along.

Make sure to stop by the following blogs to read their thoughts!

This week we are sharing our thoughts on The Winner's Curse - Chapters 1-10.

As a general's daughter in a vast empire that revels in war and enslaves those it conquers, seventeen-year-old Kestrel has two choices: she can join the military or get married. But Kestrel has other intentions. One day, she is startled to find a kindred spirit in a young slave up for auction. Arin's eyes seem to defy everything and everyone. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him'with unexpected consequences. It's not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin. But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined.

Set in a richly imagined new world, The Winner's Curse is a story of deadly games where everything is at stake, and the gamble is whether you will keep your head or lose your heart.

My thoughts....
(Might be a bit scattered since I wrote everything down as I was reading. LOL!)

The first chapter immediately gives you a taste of Kestrel's world. It opens up with Kestral at a slave auction. She isn't there trying to buy a slave, but gets caught up in the crowd and ends up having to stick around with her friend Jess till the end of the auction. Kestrel goes from wanting to leave, to being curious, and then bidding on a slave with no real reason other than curiosity.

Back at the house she gets the slave settled and meets with her father. He's the General, and has a lot of power. He's always wanted Kestral to join the military and become a soldier. I think it's great that even though she has to follow certain rules and keep up appearances, she is very upfront with her father and tells him she does not want to join the military. She has other interest. Of course, her father is in denial and believes that one day she will join him.

In the first ten chapters you can tell that Kestral is unhappy. She doesn't see things the way her father does, but chooses to play by his rules. She does break the rules every now and then, and is definitely not afraid to take charge and put people in their place. I think she is a strong MC so far!

Chapter nine is where things get a little intense and more interesting. You also learn a lot more about "Arin". I like that even though he's a slave, he isn't afraid to speak up. Kestral is slowly entering into a friendship with Arin. ((((lots of hearts)))) I love the flow of the story!

I am so happy I am re-reading this story. There was so much I had forgotten. Also, re-reading it I am picking up on little things I didn't really think was really important the first time around.

Hope you'll join us next week when we read and share our thoughts on Chapter 11 - 20!
