Stephen has been invisible for practically his whole life — because of a curse his grandfather, a powerful cursecaster, bestowed on Stephen’s mother before Stephen was born. So when Elizabeth moves to Stephen’s NYC apartment building from Minnesota, no one is more surprised than he is that she can see him. A budding romance ensues, and when Stephen confides in Elizabeth about his predicament, the two of them decide to dive headfirst into the secret world of cursecasters and spellseekers to figure out a way to break the curse. But things don’t go as planned, especially when Stephen’s grandfather arrives in town, taking his anger out on everyone he sees. In the end, Elizabeth and Stephen must decide how big of a sacrifice they’re willing to make for Stephen to become visible — because the answer could mean the difference between life and death. At least for Elizabeth.

This book wasn't horrible, nor was it boring, but at times I felt like I was reading a middle grade book, borderline Young Adult book. The characters one minute felt their age, the next they felt a lot younger. The romance is instant, and I mean about fifty pages instant. I just wasn't sold on their romance.

The main idea of the story was excellent, but I don't feel it was executed right. It needed just a little more in my opinion. I had so many questions, and still do even after reading it. I felt there were too many gaps that needed to be filled. It was also very predictable.

I’ve never read David Levithan’s work, but I am a huge fan of Andrea Cremer’s work, so I am not sure if maybe that plays a role in why I didn’t enjoy this one as much. Maybe I was comparing it solely on her Nightshade series? I don’t know, but sadly Invisibility didn't do it for me. I am not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't this.

I was curious enough though, to finish reading it and see how it ended.

2 out of 5 stars!

  2. Thanks for the review. I've heard mixed things about this. Like you, I'm a huge fan of Andrea Cremer but haven't read anything by David Levithan. I have this on reserve at the library and will have to see what I think of it.
