Touch of Death Blog Tour - Interview w/ Kelly Hashway

1.       Tell us a little about yourself and your latest/upcoming release.

I write everything from picture books to middle grade to young adult. I have five series under contract (four YA and one MG) and am represented by Lauren Hammond of ADA Management.

Touch of Death is the story of Jodi Marshall, a descendent of Medusa. She’s part human, part Gorgon and has the ability to bring the dead back to life. Unfortunately, she’s also poisonous to humans and Hades is gunning for her.

2.       When did you realize that you wanted to become a writer? What was the very first thing you ever wrote?

I’ve wanted to write since I was in elementary school. I wrote my first novel in middle school when I was reading RL Stine’s Fear Street books. My novel was about a shark attack brilliantly planned by my MC’s nemesis. It was awful ,and I remember I didn’t stop to make paragraphs because I just wanted to type it up as quickly as possible. Luckily, I learned not to try to imitate others and that paragraphs are important. ;)

3.      Do you find it hard to kill off your characters?

Yes and no. When I’m writing, I let the story take over and do what needs to be done. But when I go back and revise, I cringe at characters who are lost along the way. It hits me more then because I’m not caught up in writing the story anymore. I’m reading more like a reader and feeling the loss.

4.      How much of the characters are based on your traits or someone you know personally?

Jodi is accident prone, very much like I am. I should really be bubble wrapped when I go out in public. We also share the same birthday, December 8, and were born under the 13th sign of the zodiac, Ophiuchus. We both enjoy scalding hot tea and showers. Other than that, we’re very different.

5.      Describe your main character in six words.

Chosen, powerful, poisonous, warrior, hero, Gorgon

6.      What are you working on now?

I’m currently finishing up the Touch of Death series, working on another series called The Birth of the Phoenix (Month9Books), and going through edits for The Monster Within (Spencer Hill Press). I also have my first novella series Game. Set. Match. Heartbreak (Swoon Romance) releasing in 2013, so I’m going through edits on those as well.

7.      If you could pick a soundtrack to match your main characters life, what would it be?

        “Zombie” by The Pretty Reckless
         “Poison” by Alice Cooper
        “Warrior” by Evans Blue
“Through Hell” by We Are the Fallen
“Dance with the Devil” by Breaking Benjamin
        “Hero” by Skillet

Jodi Marshall isn’t sure how she went from normal teenager to walking disaster. One minute she’s in her junior year of high school, spending time with her amazing boyfriend and her best friend. The next she’s being stalked by some guy no one seems to know.

After the stranger, Alex, reveals himself, Jodi learns he’s not a normal teenager and neither is she. With a kiss that kills and a touch that brings the dead back to life, Jodi discovers she’s part of a branch of necromancers born under the 13th sign of the zodiac, Ophiuchus. A branch of necromancers that are descendents of Medusa. A branch of necromancers with poisoned blood writhing in their veins.

Jodi’s deadly to the living and even more deadly to the deceased. She has to leave her old, normal life behind before she hurts the people she loves. As if that isn’t difficult enough, Jodi discovers she’s the chosen one who has to save the rest of her kind from perishing at the hands of Hades. If she can’t figure out how to control her power, history will repeat itself, and her race will become extinct.
