Ryan Hunter's parties are legend. And tonight she's going to be there.

Liza Matthews anticipates the return of her best friend and only love since kindergarten from soccer camp. But when Tony finally shows up, his mind is more focused on another girl. And worse, she's a soccer player. Fighting for the attention Liza craves, she's just a hairbreadth away from making a very stupid decision. But when extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures, she's prepared to play ball to get her man.

The tryouts are hell, the first match ends bloody, and the morning after the selection party she wakes up in the worst place possible—in the arms of the captain of the soccer team. The hottest guy in school. Ryan Hunter.

I think I have a weakness for short stories/novellas. I get so sucked up in them and then am so depressed when it’s over. Play With Me is only 170 pages, but full of everything a story needs. It gets right to the point, and does not drag on and on in between scenes. I think this is the reason why I love short stories/novella so much. It jumps right to the story. Gives you enough background, introduces you to characters with so little information, but you feel like you know the characters, You can zoom through the story and be left feeling like you read an entire 400 page book. Well, when the novella is done right like Piper Shelly did with Play With Me.

If any of her books are anything like Play With Me, she has found a fan in me for life. I loved this short story and when I was done reading it I had a smile from ear to ear on my face.

If you are a fan of Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of Play With Me. It’s different in so many ways, but the emotions I experienced while reading Catching Jordan, I experienced reading Play With Me.

Liza is in love with her best friend, Tony. She decides that it’s time to tell him. Only her best friend is showing interest in someone else. Trying her hardest to get his attention and show him she really cares for him, Liza finds herself in an even bigger issue. Liza begins spending time with Ryan Hunter -- the captain of the soccer team and really good friend of Tony’s -- after waking up in his bed the next morning after one of Ryan’s house parties. She begins to look at Ryan in a different light, but struggles to understand why Ryan favors her and shows her so much attention. As the reader, it’s so obvious that he has a thing for her. Their relationship had me blushing throughout the entire story. I loved Ryan and Liza both. This was a great story and I highly recommend it. I even got butterflies in my tummy with certain scenes. I need more of Liza and Ryan, or at least more of this world Piper Shelly has created.

5 out of 5 stars!

  1. Now I want to know why he favors her and why she never noticed him before?

  7. I loved Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally and I was just thinking this cover reminds me of that book. I love a cute romance. I also like novellas and short stories because it is kind of nice to read a great story in one sitting and feel complete. I love best friend romances but it sounds like she will end up with Ryan. Still might be something I would enjoy!

  8. Oh my, and here I am, way too late to say thanks to Damaris for this lovely review. Reading the fivers is alway a very special moment, so yeah, I'm smiling like a loon right now, even though I already read this review a while ago on Goodreds... :-)

Jennifer, I downloaded CATCHING JORDAN a couple of days ago. Quite a few mentioned this book in relation with mine, so now I'm really curious. Didn't start reading it yet, but will definitely do so soon.
