Audrey Whitticomb has nothing to fear. Her mother is the superhero Morning Star, the most deadly crime-fighter in the Twin Cities, so it’s hard for Audrey not to feel safe. That is, until she’s lured into the sweet night air by something human and not human—something with talons and teeth, and a wide, scarlet smile.

Now Audrey knows the truth: her mom doesn’t fight crime at night. She fights Harrowers—livid, merciless beings who were trapped Beneath eons ago. Yet some have managed to escape. And they want Audrey dead, just because of who she is: one of the Kin.

To survive, Audrey will need to sharpen the powers she has always had. When she gets close to someone, dark corners of the person’s memories become her own, and she sometimes even glimpses the future. If Audrey could only get close to Patrick Tigue, a powerful Harrower masquerading as human, she could use her Knowing to discover the Harrowers’ next move. But Leon, her mother’s bossy, infuriatingly attractive sidekick, has other ideas. Lately, he won’t let Audrey out of his sight.

When an unthinkable betrayal puts Minneapolis in terrible danger, Audrey discovers a wild, untamed power within herself. It may be the key to saving her herself, her family, and her city. Or it may be the force that destroys everything—and everyone—she loves.

Dark Star started out a bit immature for me. I wasn’t quite sure if I was going to like it or not. It was interesting enough to hold my attention so I continued reading and I am so glad I did. It went from this immature read to this super good and fast pace story. There were still some parts that bothered me; how no one would really explain what was going on, or what exactly Audrey is, and it went on for almost more than half the book. A little would be revealed, but then nothing else for at least another five chapters. I was annoyed, but not enough to put the book down. The writing flows smoothly, and it did have two twist in it that took me by surprise.

I also liked how Audrey’s mother is basically this “super hero” in her eyes and the connection they had. Her mother never stopped being a mother to her. You don’t find that very often in YA books. Usually the characters are off at boarding school or an orphan, so this was a nice change to read.

Oh, and the romance that I saw coming from a mile away, but it doesn’t truly develop until the very end… I loved it! The bickering, the frustration, everything! You can feel the chemistry coming off the pages between Audrey and Leon.

Overall, even though I had a rough start with this book, I ended up really enjoying it and craving more. I like the characters, the world Bethany Frenette created, her writing style, and Leon. I had to throw that in there LOL!

This is a great story and I recommend it. Dark Star is a book that people of all ages will enjoy.

3.5 out of 5 Stars!
