Brooklyn Book Festival / Divergent News / Top 100 YA Books

This Saturday we'd like to share three pieces of news for you....

EAST COAST BOOK LOVERS - GET READY!
GoodChoiceReaders, if you live in NYC or plan on being around the area, don't forget to check out the 2012 Brooklyn Book Festival from September 17-23! It's the largest book festival on the northeastern seaboard.

At this year's festival, they will have 250 authors, 12 stages, and 150 exhibitors. Launched in 2005, the Brookyln Book Festival has soared in recognition and fame, especially with it's informal motto, "Hip, Smart, Diverse."

For a full listing of their schedule and events, check out their website: http://www.brooklynbookfestival.org

DIVERGENT FILM SET FOR 2014 RELEASE!
If you couldn't already tell, the girls here at GoodChoiceReading are ridiculously in love with Divergent by Veronica Roth. And the great news we just learned yesterday is that Summit Entertainment plans on releasing its film adaptation of the book in 2014! Summit has also acquired the rights to the second book in the trilogy, Insurgent.

After Twilight, I am so torn. I'm so glad that this movie will be made a film, but I'm not sure I trust Summit to handle the awesomeness that is this book, LOL.

What Do You Think?

DON'T FORGET TO CHECK OUT:
On August 7, 2012, I posted Book News about National Public Radio's list of the Top 100 Teen Novels of all time. Check out the list here

But the list has also been the subject of a lot of debate. Of course, it's always tricky trying to define exactly what constitutes a teen novel, but NPR tried their best to be fair. Still, some critics are upset that books like A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Ender's Game were cut off the list for being "too mature". But if those are too mature, why aren't The Hunger Games as well?

What Do You Think of the List?

  1. I live in Brooklyn, and I'm surprised that this event is taking place on Rosh Hashanah.

I looked over the published list of authors and was surprised that I only knew one of them by name. Mary Higgins Clark. The rest are total unknowns to me.

  3. Though I'm one who never thinks the movie will live up to the book, I like that they are adapting so many of the great YA books for movies. Two of my "kids" and two of my friends teach upper middle school and though two are not English teachers, they all keep a "lending library" in their homeroom of the recent YA releases and often once a YA movie comes out they see a surge of readers wanting these book. And anything that will get them to pick up a book and read, I applaud. I contribute any suitable YA books to them after I've read them and they always have a wishlist for me to read for them. Such a chore! :)

  4. I just ordered my own copy of divergent after being too ashamed of the library lady knowing that I'm an addict! I can't believe its about to be a movie!! But I'm with u about how stressful movie adaptations can be. I just saw The Hunger Games for the first time and it got some getting used to...not bad but not as great as I expected.
