Authors Are Rockstars Blog Tour: Anna Carey

Anna Carey is the author of EVE, which is now available wherever books are sold. The sequel, ONCE, hits shelves July 3rd, 2012. She grew up on Long Island, the daughter of a special education teacher and an astronomer. Early on she talked of being a painter, district attorney, flutist, physical therapist, or graphic designer, but eventually pursued writing—the one thing that allowed her to be all of the above. She studied Literature and Creative Writing at NYU, and took part in her fair share of snowball fights in Washington Square Park. After college, she worked as an editor in children’s publishing before getting a Masters in Fiction from Brooklyn College. She now lives in Los Angeles, where the apartments are bigger and the weather is sunnier, but she still misses New York.

Why Anna Carey is  a Rockstar?

Hi Good Choice Readers,

Wanda here, the ladies at Good Choice Reading think Anna is a rockstar because she is such a sweetheart and an awesome author. We are huge fans of her and her books. Damaris, Maria and I have met Anna Carey back a few months ago at the "Fall into the Future" tour and it was a delight chatting it up with her. She talked with us, laughed with us and even took some pictures with us! Anna is a rockstar! Why? Because she's is the definition of what Rockstars mean. A person we all admire and love. Here's a photo of Anna with us.

The year is 2032, sixteen years after a deadly virus—and the vaccine intended to protect against it—wiped out most of the earth’s population. The night before eighteen-year-old Eve’s graduation from her all-girls school she discovers what really happens to new graduates, and the horrifying fate that awaits her.

Fleeing the only home she’s ever known, Eve sets off on a long, treacherous journey, searching for a place she can survive. Along the way she encounters Caleb, a rough, rebellious boy living in the wild. Separated from men her whole life, Eve has been taught to fear them, but Caleb slowly wins her trust...and her heart. He promises to protect her, but when soldiers begin hunting them, Eve must choose between true love and her life.

When you're being hunted, who can you trust?

For the first time since she escaped from her school many months ago, Eve can sleep soundly. She's living in Califia, a haven for women, protected from the terrifying fate that awaits orphaned girls in The New America.

But her safety came at a price: She was forced to abandon Caleb, the boy she loves, wounded and alone at the city gates. When Eve gets word that Caleb is in trouble, she sets out into the wild again to rescue him, only to be captured and brought to the City of Sand, the capital of The New America.

Trapped inside the City walls, Eve uncovers a shocking secret about her past--and is forced to confront the harsh reality of her future. When she discovers Caleb is alive, Eve attempts to flee her prison so they can be together--but the consequences could be deadly. She must make a desperate choice to save the ones she loves . . . or risk losing Caleb forever.

The fate of The New America rests with Eve in this stunning finale to the Eve trilogy.

Eve is trapped in the City of Sand, married to a man of her father’s choosing, but she can’t forget her love for Caleb—or her passion for the rebel cause. When rebel armies invade the city, Eve uses her position as princess for the ultimate act of rebellion—to kill her father, the king. Then tragedy strikes, and Eve must choose who to leave behind, who to save, and who to fight in this final battle for freedom.

Anna Carey’s “Must Read” List

When I’m not writing I’m reading anything I can get my hands on—middle grade and young adult novels, commercial and literary fiction, non-fiction, memoirs, newspapers, blogs, and Trader Joe’s grocery bags (seriously…whoever writes that copy is hilarious). Below is a list of a few of my favorite books. Some are new, some are old, but all have served to inspire.

If I Stay by Gayle Forman
This novel gets the award for making me sob the hardest. It’s impossible to remain unaffected by the story, which follows a young girl choosing between life and death.

Life of Pi by Yann Martel

If you haven’t read this yet, make sure you get to it before the movie comes out this winter. Scenes from the book still follow me nearly ten years after I put it down.

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente
This modern classic is about September, a girl who sets off on an adventure to fairyland. There’s humor and heart in every line, and the characters are so easy to fall in love with.

Circling the Drain by Amanda Davis
This is one of my favorite short story collections. Highlights include: Fat ladies floating in the sky like balloons, a girl poisoning her boyfriend’s horse so he won’t ride away, and a teenager being followed by the ghost of her former self.

On Writing by Stephen King
If you’re interested in writing your own book, this is one of those great resources we authors have. Who better to get advice from than someone who’s written over fifty novels?

The Witches by Roahl Dahl
I grew up on this book, which gave me too many nightmares to count. I appreciate that the story doesn’t have a traditional happy ending.

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
This book was torture to read (I mean that in the best possible way). You’re introduced to the eerie boarding school, Halisham, and all the pain of leading a life that’s not your own.

And Then We Came to the End by Joshua Ferris
I’m reading this now and sometimes have to put down the book to laugh. Told in the plural “we”, it’s a must read for anyone who has worked in the corporate world.

Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt
I first read this book in fifth grade and I remembered it vividly. I reread it a few months ago and was amazed at how well it withstood the test of time. It was as enjoyable now as it was then.

Unearthly by Cynthia Hand
This book is about angels, yes, but it’s more about the intersection of fate and free will. I loved following Clara as she learns her purpose on earth.
