Deuce’s whole world has changed. Down below, she was considered an adult. Now, topside in a town called Salvation, she’s a brat in need of training in the eyes of the townsfolk. She doesn’t fit in with the other girls: Deuce only knows how to fight.

To make matters worse, her Hunter partner, Fade, keeps Deuce at a distance. Her feelings for Fade haven’t changed, but he seems not to want her around anymore. Confused and lonely, she starts looking for a way out.

Deuce signs up to serve in the summer patrols—those who make sure the planters can work the fields without danger. It should be routine, but things have been changing on the surface, just as they did below ground. The Freaks have grown smarter. They’re watching. Waiting. Planning. The monsters don’t intend to let Salvation survive, and it may take a girl like Deuce to turn back the tide.

Enclave was one of my favorite books of 2011, and Outpost was one of my MUST READ books for 2012. I am so happy I got the chance to read an advance copy. I love books with SUPER strong female characters that aren’t afraid of anything. And what I love more is when an author doesn’t hold back and makes this character stand out and so bad ass. If you haven’t read Enclave, then you probably have no clue what I am talking about.

You meet Deuce in Enclave and you quickly learn that in order for her to stay sane she has to kill something; preferably a “freak”, who, to some, would call a Zombie. In Outpost, she is no different. The only thing that has changed is the world she lives in. She is now up top learning about things that in her home they felt there was no need to teach.

When I think of Deuce, I think of Michelle Rodriguez. I know, Michelle is a bit too old, but that is who comes to mind whenever Deuce got into action and showed just how fearless she is. Ann Aguirre developed her character at a great pace and gives readers a chance to REALLY get to know Deuce.

Outpost is more about Deuce learning, growing, and discovering things about herself she didn’t even know was possible. She is tested plenty of times throughout the book and not once does she fall. She isn’t afraid to kill or be killed. She protects those close to her and is always the one taking charge. For someone who doesn’t know much about the real world, she is very observant and a quick learner.

Outpost to me was super entertaining. There is plenty of action in it, but I felt that it wasn’t as action packed as the first. This was the only thing that sort of bothered me. I was expecting a lot more action than it had, but as I mentioned before, it’s more about Deuce and her struggles. The romance is highlighted more in this book than in Enclave so it balanced out. From the way the book ended, I can tell that the next book is going to be CRAZY! Ann Aguirre knows exactly how to trap you inside her book.

4 out of 5 Stars!

  3. I love that cover. Almost reason enough to pick up the book by itself!

Question though: I've sometimes been turned off by uber-tough girls who stop feeling like real women in the author's attempt to make them tougher than everybody and anything else. How do you think Aguirre avoided this pitfall?

    1. You're there with Duece throughout Enclave and you see what she's going through, and what's made her the way she is. But when it comes down to it, she is vulnerable when it comes to her devotion to certain people.

  39. I have heard good things about Enclave and was thinking of picking it up, but I was hesitant to try any books with dsytopic story lines or zombies. This year I have really gone out of my usual reading genre and finally picked up some must reads like Divergent and Legend and I have not been disappointed! I love strong lead female characters who take charge and solve problems while kicking butt and taking names. Deuce sounds like someone I have to get to know. Thanks for the great review!
