THE WRITER’S CAVE ~ WHERE I LIKE TO WRITE

Where do I like to write? Whenever I’m asked this question, I wish I could describe a glamorous writing destination where I craft my stories in some hole-in-the-wall coffee shop, or an ivy-covered library shaded by ancient oak trees. I wish I could talk about how I sip tea and look demure and mysterious while scribbling in one of those pretty cloth-bound journals (and if we’re concocting a fantasy here, then my handwriting is perfect, too).

However, my handwriting is atrocious and I hardly ever frequent coffee shops or look demure. I mostly bang away at my computer at home—in bed—while makeup-less, unshowered, and clad in ratty pajamas. I have this thick, comfortable memory foam mattress topper, and I like to wake up, grab my laptop, and get straight to work. I often only move to get some coffee or grab a granola bar. (Note to self: granola in the bed is a bad idea. The crumbs get everywhere and then they tickle.)

My other writing place is a little more unusual. I’ve been trying to decrease the time I spend sitting while upping my daily exercise. I looked into buying a fancy “treadmill desk,” but those price tags made me wince and clutch my wallet in terror, so I had to brainstorm another solution. In the end, I turned my ordinary treadmill into a desk by laying an Ikea Lack shelf across the hand bars and setting my laptop on it. Tada! Instant walking desk. And it’s actually a really neat way to get some exercise while using my computer. My treadmill even has speakers that I can plug my laptop into so I can play music at the same time. I’m comfortable walking at about 3 MPH while I write or surf the web.

It’s not quite a romantic coffee shop, but at least it gets the job done, and I can get my exercise in at the same time!
