Writing Multiple Series...How Do I Keep Up? by Kailin Gow, Author of Circus Summer and 20 other YA Series

All my life, I've been known to have several things happening at once. In fact, a prophet once told me that I will be known for it. No kidding. That's a strange thing to be told when you're a teenager (well...18 years old). Sounds familiar? Well...my life is very much like my books. No, I'm not a slayer, but I write fictional series - young adult, and mature young adult, contemporary, and paranormal, fantasy, science fiction, dystopian, steampunk, and whatever takes my fancy.

Having been in management and executive positions in the past, I'm used to multitasking and working with multiple projects. When I became a full-time author, it became very important for me to be organized and to treat each series separately. I work on multiple series at different stages at the same time, but when I'm working on one in particular, it gets all my attention for that time. For the most part, I plan out most of my series when I first conceive it and sketch out the story arcs of the series. They're planned in beats and stages. Everything is in my head, but I do detailed outlines (close to 100 pages sometimes) and diagrams. Sometimes there is free-flow with stream of conscious writing. Overall, what keeps everything together is a combination of:

1) Extreme organization
2) Living and knowing these stories and characters so well
3) Having a passion for these stories and loving the characters so much that they're brought to life on paper
4) A miracle!!!
So there you have it...how I keep up with all of my series.

Circus Summer (Circus of Curiosities Book #1) by Kailin Gow is a YA Dystopian Fantasy - Releases July 2, 2012

In post-apocalypse America, every season, the Circus of Curiosities visits the city, bringing with it the most fantastic circus acts that are beautiful, majestic, curious, and death-defying. Every season performers for these acts are chosen from the young men and women in each town, trained, and sent to perform in a live grand performance, performed literally to the death. Two performers from Sea Cliff, a beach town at the outskirts of The Center find themselves chosen to be in this Summer's Circus Act. Both must win at any cost, but could they ignore their feelings for each other? Leela Sinclair needs to win in order to get to The Center where she can get medical help from the best physicians for her ailing mother, plague with a condition no one have heard of. For Zachary Nile, his reasons for becoming a performer at the Circus is more mysterious. Only the ringmaster and the Circus of Curiosities owner Dex Hightower (Dr. Dex) knows what the touring Circus is really about amidst the magic and splendor. Despite the Great War and the poverty surrounding the land except for the towns fortunate enough to be near the Center, Dr. Dex and the Circus performers all know, "The show must go on."

  2. I think with good organization a person can do about anything! Unfortunately my brain cannot be organized to write multiple series and genre's. I get frenzied just running my blogs and keeping things organized there!
