It's been a while since witches had to worry about being burnt at the stake…

Forty-nine, English and a professional crone, Sophronia is touring America when she is forced to spend the night at a run-down motel on the Californian coast. Her expectations aren't high- - if the bed's clean and the toilet flushes she'll count herself lucky. But events are about to become far more interesting. The motel owner is a juvenile witch unaware of her heritage and in dire need of help, especially when vampires turn up...

This was not my normal kind of book and I did not know it until I was to far into it to turn back. I am a romance reader and romance of some kind only. I did not find this book to really have any romance in it. Yes there was attraction, but not enough to call romance to me. I however found I liked this book.

Sophronia is an older and experienced witch. This itself was new to me and I found I liked to finally have a strong older woman in the lead versus the always young and sometimes naive young one. When Sophronia meets Charlie a young witch with no knowledge of who she is or what she can do, Sophronia can't help but feel a kinship and duty to help Charlie out. Together the woman build a bond and do what they can to help each other out.

Sophronia being the Crone (older witch) is sought after by the old vampire for her powers. Compelled by him she is his prisoner and must do what it takes to saver herself and Charlie, but plans to run at the first chance she gets. As the story goes on you see he is not as mean as many try to make him out to be and so different than most old ones, Sophronia cant help but like him in some ways. No matter how much she likes him she will not stay under his spell, witches no longer need the protection of vampires like they used to.

When Charlie's cousin goes missing she seeks Sophronia to help get her back. But should Sophronia take the only chance she has at freedom or does she help Charlie and know she will be back under the vampires spell. Once in the lair of vampires Sophronia must take protection from the one person she fear most to get out alive.

A great mystery and interesting twist of events. I look forward to the next book to see where to all goes from here.

3.5 out of 5 stars

  2. hmmm, I thought this would be more of a romance read too, especially with that hot cover. I love romance in my books, but Jocelynn Drake and Adrian Phoenix have surprised me with their books. Their characters had so much chemistry I got to see the romance bloom over a few books in the series, than getting it all at once. Sounds like something I may need to try and see if I like it. Great review
