Blog Tour: Transcendence by CJ Omololu--Guest Post!

Talents

One of the themes in TRANSCENDENCE is that you often have a break in your memories of past lives and can use this to carry a talent or skill from one lifetime to the next, even if you don’t remember your past lives. We’ve all heard of child prodigies –kids that are born knowing how to play chess or just sit down at a piano and start composing sonatas. There’s a little 6 year old girl right now who is going to the National Spelling Bee as the youngest competitor ever – it’s like she came out of the womb knowing how to spell everything.

This got me thinking that maybe there was a reason that some people are born with particularly advanced skills – maybe they did these things in a past life and now their essence is somehow remembering how to do them in this one. Because the Akhet in my book remember all of their past lives, they retain all of the things they knew how to do in one lifetime and can use them in  their current lifetime – most can speak several languages, can read really quickly, do complicated math computations, have eidetic memories and can play instruments.  None of the abilities in TRANSCENDENCE are magical – all are physiologically possible and a result of things they’ve learned in the past.

Of course, now I want some of these skills, even though I’m not Akhet.  While I’d love to be able to speak Italian instantly or play a piano flawlessly, I think the talent that I’d most like to have is to be able to sing. And not just happy birthday, but really sing with a voice that can move people to tears. Maybe this talent is a result of luck and physiology, but maybe singing well and having perfect pitch is something that can be honed in a past lifetime and brought forward in this one. Who knows?

If you could be born with any talent already in place, what would it be? Would you like to be a golf phenom or a violin virtuoso?

Thanks for letting me come by the blog!

About Transcendence

Hardcover; 336 pages
Published June 5, 2012 by Walker & Company

When a visit to the Tower of London triggers an overwhelmingly real vision of a beheading that occurred centuries before, Cole Ryan fears she is losing her mind. A mysterious boy, Griffon Hall, comes to her aid, but the intensity of their immediate connection seems to open the floodgate of memories even wider.
As their feelings grow, Griffon reveals their common bond as members of the Akhet—an elite group of people who can remember past lives and use their collected wisdom for the good of the world. But not all Akhet are altruistic, and a rogue is after Cole to avenge their shared past. Now in extreme danger, Cole must piece together clues from many lifetimes. What she finds could ruin her chance at a future with Griffon, but risking his love may be the only way to save them both.
Full of danger, romance, and intrigue, Transcendence breathes new life into a perpetually fascinating question: What would you do with another life to live?

  1. I wouldn't mind being a viola virtuoso; I'm pretty good considering I've been playing for 14 years but I could be so much better. That was the main thing I thought about as Cole was a cello virtuoso.
