Series: Darkness Rising #2 / Darkest Powers #5

Maya and her friends--all of whom have supernatural powers--have been kidnapped after fleeing from a forest fire they suspect was deliberately set, and after a terrifying helicopter crash they find themselves pursued by evildoers in the Vancouver Island wilderness.
I tried. I really really tried to love this series. I found little moments that were redeeming, but overall, I'm just not a fan of these books.

Kelley Armstrong is a great writer as far as story-telling, suspense and description are all concerned. I can't begrudge her the fact that she has the ability to make you feel like you are right inside the story.

But at the same time, I felt like this story just didn't go anywhere. The entire novel was spent watching Maya and her friends escape and then get caught, and then escape and then get caught, over and over again. I felt like the questions I had from the first book in the series were never really answered and I just ended up with a lot more.

I think there are many people who would truly enjoy these books, but unfortunately, I'm just not one of them. Maybe if someone passes along part three to me, I will read it - but chance are I will never know what happens to Maya and her friends.

2 out of 5 stars.

  1. This was very much a filler book I agree that not alot happened. I still enjoyed it though but Kelley has always been my favorite author. Too bad you didn't enjoy it more. It seems to be a love or hate type of series.

  3. I can see why you wouldn't have loved these books. I just thought they were fun light reads. I was expected an epic story so I was satisfied with the writing and just the overall cuteness of the story. Just something to read when you want something light and easy.
