Review: The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa

Hardcover: 485 pgs
Published: Harlequin Teen
Publisher: April 24, 2012
Series: Blood of Eden #1

Some days, all the drives Allison Sekemoto to live is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. She is a human living in filth and squalor thanks to them. Until...

One day, Allie is attacked and faced with the ultimate choice: die or become a vampire. Face with her own mortality, she becomes what she despises most.

What can I say about Julie Kagawa? I honestly believe this woman can write about the phone book and make it sound fascinating. She's just that damn talented.

After writing the ridiculously popular and immensely raved about Iron Fey Series, The Immortal Rules is Julie's first foray into the vampire genre. But boy, does she twist it all on its head!

In this world, Vampires have taken over - feeding off of humans as "pets" and killing them for sport. Our heroine, Allie, is a human who refuses to let them win. Until that fateful day where instead of dying as a human, she chooses to live on as a vampire. She chooses life...or some form of it anyway. (P.S. - All of this drama happens in just the beginning of the book)

The rest of the story focuses on Allie's life as a vampire trying to hang on to her human soul. Her life - this book - this story is like one crazy roller coaster that scares the crap out of you, but you never want to get off. Between Allie's new vampire mentor, her new human friends (who she wants to bite every five seconds), the human guy she's falling for, and the psycho trying to kill her - the action and intensity of this novel never stops.

I love Julie Kagawa's writing so much and I want to thank her for a) writing a vampire book that's not like a single one you've ever read, and b) creating yet another kick-ass female character who stays true to herself no matter how hard the adversity.

6 out of 5 stars! (It's released tomorrow - go buy it!!)

  4. I feel like this book is definitely in the running to be the blogosphere's favorite YA read of the year-I've just seen so much praise for it (and I really loved it myself) and it completely invigorated the tired old vampire story.

  5. The Immortal Rules is the first book in the Blood of Eden series by Julie Kagawa. The story takes place in a dystopian future where most of the human population has been decimated by a new viral plague-The Red Lung virus. Vampires now rule the world and humans are 'registered' blood donors in exchange for food and shelter. It's chilling, to say the least.

The story is told from the point of view of Allie, our main character. She's a teen-aged Fringer, someone who lives outside the protection of the vampires; unregistered, she's no one's blood bag. She is determined to find a way to help the humans take back their world. Allie is a very strong, loyal and emotionally tough character; she's had to be to get by in life. You can't help but admire her loyalty and strength as she struggles in this strange world she lives in.
