Thursday Question of The Day!

Hi GCReaders!

Today's question of the day is:

How far do you read into a book before you decide you can't continue to read?

For me, I can usually tell by the third chapter or fourth if I am going to like a book, or finish reading it, but I don't stop there. Only because there has been tons of books that have taken me by surprise by page one hundred. So now I wait until about page one hundred before I decide to stop reading a book.

So how about you? When do you know it's time to put down the book and put it away and never look back lol?

  1. It depends really I think. Sometimes I make it a few chapters and realize this book isn't for me. Other times, even if the book is dragging I'll continue, because I feel bad just completely stopping lol.

    1. See, I know lots of people, Maria being one, who can't put the book down until they finish it even if it's horrible lol. I can't do that lol

  2. I read a few chapters in. Just to give the story time to pick up but if I got over hundred pages and still nothings happening. I stop. No need to torture myself.

  3. For me I would say that if by page 150 I don't like the book I would stop reading. However, like Jena said I would feel bad for stopping.

    1. I use to be the same way. But since I'm a reviewer now. I don't have the time to spend on a book that doesn't suit me. I have to move along to the next.

    2. I agree with you Wanda! As a reviewer, you learn that you don't have the time to waste lol.

  4. I used to be pretty adamant about 50 pages. If it can't grab me in 50 pages, I'm not reading it! But these days I try to wait until about 100 as well, because there have been some books that took a while to grab me but blew me away in the end.

    1. hahah like Divergent. I was ready to give up by like pg 90 and was wondering why everyone was ranting about it... then like two more pages and I was hooked lol

  5. I have only stopped reading a book twice. I can't even remember the names of them because it was before I started logging them. It takes alot for me to stop. I feel bad not finishing a book. I guess it's also because I usually read books from authors I know or have been recommended to me or if it's a new author the reviews from yours' and other sites help me and I haven't been led astray yet.

  6. I usually give it one or two chapters, but it has been a long time since I quit on a book. I've gotten better about knowing what I want, and about pushing past that initial bad impression in hopes that the end will be better. And it usually is.

  7. I usually try to make it to about page 75. If I'm not into by then, I put it away because there's just too many books on the TBR pile to waste my time reading a book that I'm having to work at.

    1. I think that's my problem. I feel like I have such a huge list of books and if a book hasn't grabbed me by chapter three, then I tend to put it down for either another time, or forever. LOL

  8. It depends on the book... if I like the premise- I will try to stick with it. But if I pick it up and it completely confuses me, or is just plain terrible- I usually go within the first few chapters.

  9. I hate getting so far into a book and putting it down but based on the books on my abandoned shelf it's usually around page 100 or so for me too.

  10. I use to say page 50, but if I've heard great things about it or see the potential I push myself to page 100. Oh, and if it's a review book I sometimes push myself to keep reading as well.

    1. Agreed- if it is something I agreed to review, I will usually try longer.

    2. See I can't. This where having more than one reviewer on the blog comes in handy. If I can't read it, I contact the team and see who wants a shot at it. Raquel usually helps me out in that department lol.

  11. For me 50 pages. If I can't get into by then I DNF. If it starts to pick up I'll keep going.

  12. About 3 pages. If I read more, I finish the entire book. I'm actually pretty particular about this. I finish every book I start. I'm just really careful about what books I start ;)

  13. I usually go at least 50% because I've also been surprised by big turnarounds halfway. I usually stick until 60-70% unless it's really awful at 50% still. It rarely happens that I don't finish a book. Maybe 2-3 a year.

    1. You know, I have to agree. I am one of those though that needs to be captured at least the first three chapters or I already know that I won't like it.

There has been tons of books I've put down after like chapter three lol that everyone rants about and says I should pick up again. lol
