Review: The Selection by Kiera Cass

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in the palace and compete for the heart of the gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself- and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

This is one of those books that make me want to scream at how good it is. I felt so bad because while I was reading it I had a friend over and all I did was read while she watched TV. Every time she tried to tell me something I would put my finger up to shush her. I was just so lost inside the book and did not want to come out.

The characters were awesome; every single one of them. America, who is your main character, is definitely my favorite. She was such a strong character and appreciates life. She never expects anything, and is content with her life and the people in it. I really liked that even though she wasn’t rich, or super poor, she treated everyone around her the same.

When she signs up to for The Selection, she never thought she would get picked. She didn’t even try in her little audition. So why would she get picked? When she finds out that she has been chosen and will be moving into the mansion with the super yummy hot Prince Maxon, she is actually disappointed. But she knows that this is a chance of a lifetime and it can really help her family out. Plus, something happened back home that has left her with her heart shattered. So she sets off to the house as an escape. She has no intention of winning the competition or even trying to win the Prince’s heart.

You know how sometimes when you want something so badly, it never happens? But then when you least expect, or aren't even trying, the world is handed to you? That's what it was like for America. She couldn’t care less about winning and even tries to sabotage her chances once or twice, but in the end all she did was get the Prince’s attention more. In my honest opinion, she would make a great Queen if she won. I really hope the story heads in that direction. There is a slight love-triangle, but I feel it was done really well. It wasn’t the main focus at all. The friendship that American builds with some of the ladies in the house and the Prince was a lot of fun to read, too. That’s probably what I loved most about the book; her friendship with the Prince and how secretive they both were. And how America was so oblivious to everyone around her who wished they were her.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story and wish I had book two in my hands right now! It’s a definite page-turner! Only problem I have is the ending. It’s not a huge cliffhanger, but it definitely bugged me. But America's decision was a brave one. You will have to read to find out.

I give The Selection 4.5 out of 5 Stars!

  6. I'm on the fence about this book. Too many Harper books have become cookie cutters of each other. It seems they all have to fit into the same model to be published and I'm just tired of that same old same old story.

I'm glad you really enjoyed this one and once it comes out I might just take the hours out of my day to read it.

    Thanks for the great review.

  9. I love hearing different opinions. Everyone's tastes are so different (which is great, because I often go loopy over books other people shrug at). But I really wasn't a fan of this book. Actually, it was probably one of my biggest disappointments of the year.
