Review: Immortal City by Scott Speer

Immortal City
By Scott Speer Hardcover, 336 pages Expected publication: April 3rd 2012 By Razorbill
Jackson Godspeed is the hottest young Angel in a city filled with them. He's days away from becoming a full Guardian, and people around the world are already competing for the chance to be watched over by him. Everyone's obsessed with the Angels and the lucky people they protect - everyone except for Madison Montgomery. Maddy's the one girl in Angel City who doesn't breathlessly follow the Angels on TV and gossip blogs. When she meets Jackson, she doesn't recognize him. But Jackson is instantly captivated by her, and against all odds the two fall in love. Maddy is swiftly caught up in Jackson's scene, a world of glamour, paparazzi - and murder. A serial killer is on the loose, leaving dead Angels' wings for the police to find on the Walk of Fame. Even the Guardians are powerless to protect themselves in the face of this threat … and this time it's up to Maddy to save Jackson.

Immortal City was just on okay read for me. It has a slow build up and because of this it took me a long time to really get into the story. It wasn’t until the two main characters actually met that the story got good. I don’t think it’s a horrible story obviously since I did finish it, but I just wasn’t wowed by it. There were times where I felt like I was reading an episode of 90210 or Gossip Girl, only with Angels.

I thought it was pretty interesting though that the world Speer created angels live out in the open and humans are well aware of them. In Immortal City, angels are hired to protect. So if you don’t have the money to hire an angel to protect you, you’re pretty much out of luck. Maddy has to be the only human in the world who doesn’t know who Jackson Godspeed is. She doesn’t care to keep up with the gossip, news, or blogging world. So when Jackson enters the diner one night he is shocked to learn that she has no idea who he is. That to me was when the story got super interesting. It seemed to pick up a bit after that. I think my whole thing is I could have done without the whole celebrity feel of it and the paparazzi, etc. The story was actually really good when it didn’t involve “the press” or “TV show” appearances.

Overall, I did enjoy the relationship between Jackson and Maddy. I thought it was really cute how Jackson fell in love with Maddy. My heart got all soft when he poured his heart out to her. It did have a little action and a nice shock towards the end of the book.

 3 out of 5 Stars!

  1. This sounds really difefernt for an angel story to have them out in the open (like true blood and vampires) but the review on it so far have not been that great theyre either negative or just mediocre. Not sure about it yet.

    1. It wasn't horrible and the writing was actually pretty good, I just felt like I was sucked into the world of 90210 and Gossip Girl. Without that, I think this book could easily have been a five star.

  2. I was into the synopsis until the celebrity/paparazzi aspect came in. I doubt I'd turn this book away, but your review has helped me avoid putting something on my TBR that shouldn't be there. Thanks! Great review!
