Review: In My Dreams by Cameo Renae

It was happening again. The dreams. The nightmares. It was something seventeen year-old Elizabeth "Lizzy" Hayes thought she'd outgrown; dreams that would come true; detailed premonitions of how people would die. This time she dreams about her boyfriend, Michael Young, and soon discovers that he's been found... dead.
Michael hasn't crossed over because he was murdered, and now his murderer is coming for Lizzy. His spirit won't rest until she is safe, and as a newbie spirit, the easiest way for him to make contact is through Lizzy's dreams. When she dreams, it's as if he hasn't died.
Lizzy must learn to pull on her inner strength to survive horrifying events. Meanwhile, in the spirit world, Michael learns everything he can about his supernatural gifts to help. But will it be enough to save her?

In My Dreams is a great story that is both engrossing and heartbreaking. It is extremely bittersweet,  and I enjoyed it. I’m usually not a fan of novels that involve death of a loved one, because I feel like I’ve seen it enough in life. However, the spiritual aspect of this story in particular made it a lot more enjoyable, while maintaining the feelings of grief and loss. Well done.

I only had a few issues with the novel. The writing and the main character’s language were the biggest issues. I felt at times the writing was too descriptive, and I found myself wanting to skim things because I just didn’t care what Liz was doing every single second. (Although I did love this when it came to describing scenery) Don’t let this discourage you from reading the book, though. I feel the same way about Charlaine Harris’s books and look at where her writing has gotten her.

Liz was a great character. She was sweet and loving, but at times she felt a lot older than seventeen. At one point she refers to the place where she and Michael began dating as the place he asked her “to go steady”.  We thought those words were outdated when I was a teenager, so I can’t imagine what today’s teens would think when they read that.

Michael is the dream guy, quite literally. He did seem too good to be true. I didn’t see a single flaw in him, so that did it make it a little difficult to find him a believable character. Their relationship is sweet enough to cause cavities, and I think for some readers it will be too much, while others will fall in love with the two of them. It was too much for me personally, but I am quite the cynic when it comes to love.

Overall, In My Dreams was a good read. The writing could use some tightening up (there were some grammar and punctuation erros that were noticeable to my [mostly] untrained eye), as well as the language used by the main character, but it was still enjoyable. I’ll be keeping an eye out for Cameo Renae’s future releases.
