Author Spotlight: Interview & Giveaway w/ erotic romance author Samantha Kane!

Interview and Giveaway with erotic romance author, Samantha Kane!

My name is Samantha Kane and I write historical romance. I have an ongoing erotic Regency series called Brothers in Arms with Ellora's Cave Publishing. The series is about veterans of the Peninsular War in England after the war, roughly 1817-1820. There are nine books in the series. The most recent book in the series, Love's Surrender, was released December 7.

I have published fifteen books. In addition to my historical romances, I write m/m contemporary romance (Cherry Pie, published by Loose Id), m/f contemporary erotic romance (Play it Again, Sam), and erotic science fiction romance (Tomorrow).

I asked my friends and followers on Twitter and Facebook for questions about my books. So, here are the questions and some answers. :-) Btw, I got some great questions! I can't answer them all here. But it's given me the urge to do a Facebook Q&A one of these days.

Q: Tell us a little about the war your heroes (in the Brothers in Arms series) are veterans of: (Minor history lesson ahead)

A: The Peninsular War was part of the larger Napoleonic War. The Napoleonic War was a continuation of the war opposing the French Revolution. The war was between a coalition of European states, including Britain, against France. First against the revolutionaries, and then against Napoleon. (This is a VERY condensed version.) The Peninsular War was fought on the Iberian Peninsula-Spain and Portugal. Until the Peninsular War in 1808 there was no large British force on the continent fighting against the French. The future Duke of Wellington, Sir Arthur Wellesley, led the British troops in the Peninsula. This war between the British, there to support Spanish and Portuguese rebels, against the French was the beginning of guerrilla warfare. It was a bloody campaign which included high casualties and long sieges of several cities. The Peninsular War continued until 1814.

Q: When doing a series is it difficult to maintain continuity (character names, ages, etc?)

A: Yes and no. The larger a series is, the harder it is. I once started a character chart, and then that old computer crashed and I lost it. Sigh. And I've always meant to go back and do another one. But, I really don't need one. I don't use every character is every book. And before I start a new book, I tend to go back and read/skim any previous books that tie into the current storyline to refresh my memory and put my head back into that "space." It helps to maintain voice and continuity. The characters are like family to me. It's pretty hard to forget the names of your family. Not impossible, but pretty hard. If I wrote epic fantasy novels, I'd probably need a character chart and series bible to maintain continuity and remember the cast of characters. But the scope of my historical series tends to be relatively small and easier to remember.

Q: How did you chose the time period in which you set your series? What training in your previous profession has helped you in your current one?

A: I was an avid historical romance reader before I became a writer. And my favorite historical romances were Regencies. I have a Master's degree in History, and I taught high school for almost ten years before I started writing historical romances. My sister was in Iraq with the Army at the beginning of the war, and she sent regular emails about her experiences there. I'm not sure what the spark was exactly, but one day I asked myself the big what if question that led to an idea about veterans of the Peninsular War dealing with PTSD and the consequences of war once they got back home. I was familiar with the time period and the history, and because of the nature of the Peninsular War it was ideally suited for stories about veterans suffering from the physical, emotional and mental wounds of war.

Q: What new ideas are you working on? What's next?

A: I always have new ideas! Finding the time to work on them is the problem. :-) But I have some new projects in the works, including a new mainstream Regency series (look for more information on that in the coming months), a sequel to my best-selling m/m contemporary Cherry Pie, set in small town Mercury, North Carolina, and the next book in my Brothers in Arms series, which will be Daniel's story. For any new readers, the books in this series can be read as stand alone books.

Thank you Samantha! I had an idea once for a book, saved it onto my old computer, and then it crashed. I learned my lesson. Now I just save everything on a USB as back-up. LOL

GIVEAWAY!

Samantha will be giving away a copy of her latest release, Love's Surrender. Here is some information about the book:

Lady Vanessa Carlton-Smythe is from one of England’s most well respected families and the daughter of an earl. She has lived an exemplary life—the perfect daughter, the perfect lady. Until one Christmas Eve she meets two men who unleash her secret desires. She can’t surrender her heart, only her body, and only for the next twelve days. After Twelfth Night their affair must end and she will return to a life that is slowly suffocating her.

Veterans Nick and Oliver have been constant companions since Waterloo. They share everything, including women and a bad reputation. When Lady Vanessa catches them in a compromising position, they are seduced by the longing in her eyes. Cool, distant, unattainable—the more she protests, the more they want her. Vanessa’s desires prompt the two men to finally give in to their feelings and become lovers. When desire becomes love, can they convince Vanessa to leave her privileged life behind and surrender to them forever?
