Review: Graffiti Moon by Cath Crowley

Hardcover 272 pages
Expected Publication: February 14th, 2011 by Knopf Books for Young Readers

Senior year is over, and Lucy has the perfect way to celebrate: tonight, she's going to find Shadow, the mysterious graffiti artist whose work appears all over the city. He's out there somewhere—spraying color, spraying birds and blue sky on the night—and Lucy knows a guy who paints like Shadow is someone she could fall for. Really fall for. Instead, Lucy's stuck at a party with Ed, the guy she's managed to avoid since the most awkward date of her life. But when Ed tells her he knows where to find Shadow, they're suddenly on an all-night search around the city. And what Lucy can't see is the one thing that's right before her eyes.

Graffiti Moon was absolutely adorable. I don’t think I’m quite as blown away by it as everyone else seems to be, but I really enjoyed it. I loved the large roll that art plays in the story. Crowley has a way with words. I had no issues imagining what Lucy was seeing as she was describing Ed’s work. It was fantastic.

I liked the characters in Graffiti Moon. They were all a little bit quirky and made me laugh a few different times.  I liked that they were realistically flawed, and they were facing struggles that a lot of teens face these days. Not just personal problems, but also financial issues, and I think that is something that is often ignored in the genre.

The setting and the lingo was a little bit difficult for me to get used to, but that didn’t take away from the story. I really liked it, and once I started reading, I didn’t stop until I was finished. It has left me anxious to read Crowley’s other work, and to see what she comes up with next.

4/5 Stars!
