Every other day, Kali D'Angelo is a normal sixteen-year-old girl. She goes to public high school. She attends pep rallies. She's human.

And then every day in between...She's something else entirely.

Though she still looks like herself, every twenty-four hours predatory instincts take over and Kali becomes a feared demon-hunter with the undeniable urge to hunt, trap, and kill zombies, hellhounds, and other supernatural creatures. Kali has no idea why she is the way she is, but she gives in to instinct anyway. Even though the government considers it environmental terrorism.

When Kali notices a mark on the lower back of a popular girl at school, she knows instantly that the girl is marked for death by one of these creatures. Kali has twenty-four hours to save her and, unfortunately, she'll have to do it as a human. With the help of a few new friends, Kali takes a risk that her human body might not survive...and learns the secrets of her mysterious condition in the process.

Alright, I have to say that at first, I was very, very skeptical about this book. It was full of hellhounds, zombies, chupacabras, and a teenage girl who changes every other day into an evil-killing machine.

But the more I kept reading, the more I found myself completely engrossed in this novel. The action is intense (a tidbit: "Razor-sharp teeth clamped over [me], cutting through the flesh of my forearm like butter and snapping the bone." pg. 7), the love story is crazy romantic and the guy-who-needs-saving is H-O-T! But most importantly, and true to Jennifer Lynn Barnes' style, there is a really strong story of friendship in here between three girls who are so different that in any other situation, they probably wouldn't have said more than two words to each other.

Kali is our main character, and she kicks ass! She's determined, incredibly smart and goes for what she wants - no matter the costs. She has a complicated relationship with her parents (which anyone can relate to), and I promise, you will find yourself rooting for her every step of the way!

I can't wait til for the next one in this series!! It rocked :)

5 out of 5 stars

  1. Oh wow. I was very skeptical about it too which is why I haven't read it yet - got it on Netgalley. But you make it sound really cool and I love a great protagonist!

  2. I loved this one! I loved the chupacabra too - fresh/original species for a paranormal novel. I completely agree about the intense action scenes - they were my favorite parts. Nice review :D
