Review: The Vision by Jen Nadol

Cassie Renfield knows the mark tells her when someone is going to die and that she can intervene and attempt to change fate. But she still doesn't understand the consequences, especially whether saving one life dooms another. With no family left to offer guidance, Cassie goes in search of others like her. But when she meets Demetria, a troubled girl who seems to have the power of the Fates, Cassie finds the truth isn't at all what she expected. And then there's her heady new romance with bad boy Zander. Dating him has much graver repercussions than she could ever have imagined, forcing Cassie to make choices that cut to the essence of who she is and what she believes.

Series: The Mark #2

So I'm about halfway through this book when Damaris at GCR tells me, "You know that that's the 2nd book in a series, right? Have you read The Mark?" Of course, because I'm me, I didn't have a clue that this was even part of a series!

My cluelessness aside, I think that Jen Nadol did a great job of making sure that you didn't even need to read the first book to enjoy The Vision. In fact, this book was so good that I plan on going back and reading The Mark, especially because I would love to read more about Cassie as she first learned of her gift/curse.

What you do learn in this book (for all those who are unfamiliar with the story) is that Cassie has the power to see a mark on a person's forehead - 24 hours before they die. She knows that she can stop that person from dying, but she also believes that if she saves one person from death, she condemns another. So how do you choose? How can you possibly walk by a person knowing that they're going to die and not be able to say anything?

On the other side of the story, Cassie is also juggling multiple men in her life and her heart. There's Jack - a character we barely see in this novel - who we know that Cassie is deeply in love with. He lives in an entirely different town. Then there is Ryan - he works at the same funeral parlor that Cassie does, and she doesn't seem to notice how much he's in love with her. Finally, there is Zander - the hot guy that Cassie is warned off against from the very beginning, but who she can't seem to stay away from. Zander actually turns out to be more than Cassie bargained for, and in the end, I'm not sure I even like him anymore.

I definitely recommend this book to everyone out there - even if you haven't read The Mark. My only complaint is that I wish Cassie had seen the mark more times throughout this book.

4 out of 5 stars

  1. I love Jen Nadol. Damaris and I met her at "Be my paranormal valentine" back in February. I read "The Mark" and it is a really good first book. So I was excited when BEA had this book. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

  2. I haven't heard about this book, nonetheless the series.
But by your review, I just want to know, what happens?!
Especially why you might not like Zander...
Will there be a third book?

  3. I agree! I wasn't a fan of Zander either. @ Cindy- You have to read the series. It's a good series. It's starts with "The Mark" and then this one comes out in about 2 weeks. Give it a try. I think it's always better reading a book back to back so that way you won't forget any details from the previous book.
