REVIEW: HALF BLOOD BY JENNIFER L. ARMENTROUT

The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi pure-bloods have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures.

Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:

Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden.

Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

Series: Covenant #1

Aiden is one of a breed of demi-gods called pure-bloods. Half bloods and pure bloods exist in this world to kill daimons and protect their race. Alex, our heroine, is a half-blood. In this society, half-bloods are breeded to either become soldiers or servants. Alex is determined to never become a servant - and as it turns out, she learns that she is actually so much more.

Alex is a kick-ass female character. Although she has the occasion dumb move every now and then - like speaking when she should be staying quiet - it is refreshing to see a character who refuses to let anyone knock her down. She is also written so well that I feel like most young women will easily be able to relate to her.

In the story, she ends up having Aiden as a trainer. Yea...I'm basically in love with Aiden! He is sexy, smart, super-strong, and protective of Alex without being overbearing. But of course, as with any good love story, they are forbidden to be together. As a half-blood, Alex can be punished for even disrespecting Aiden. Of course, she can't help but fall for him anyway - and we fall right with her. Aiden helps Alex during one of the most difficult times in her life and you just know that no matter what the law says, he would do anything for her.

One of the best parts of this story focuses on the idea of having to kill someone you love. If you knew that someone you loved more than anything in the world was evil, would you be able to kill them? The question is posed throughout the entire story and I couldn't help but wonder if I would react in the same way that Alex did.

Jennifer Armentrout is a fanastic story-teller and this novel was such an easy read. I will be gladly waiting to pick up the next one.

4 1/2 out of 5 stars (I took off 1/2 a star because I wish there had been more daimon fighting, lol)
