REVIEW: FALLEN STAR BY JESSICA SORENSEN

For eighteen year-old Gemma, life has never been normal. Up until recently, she has been incapable of feeling emotion. And when she's around Alex, the gorgeous new guy at school, she can feel electricity that makes her skin buzz. Not to mention the monsters that haunt her nightmares have crossed over into real-life. Fallen Star definitely had a few good qualities to it, but most of the elements in the story were just okay for me.

1) The Concept: The basic premise is that our main character, Gemma, harnessed the power of a fallen star when she was just a baby. And now, because of her power, she is the only one who has the ability to stop the world from ending.

I think this is an interesting story idea but what I didn't like was the fact that the world would be ending in 2012 as the planets aligned. To me, 2012 has just been so used and abused, and honestly, I could've done without it.

2) The male hero: Alex. I loved him! He's protective, a little cocky, strong and exactly the kind of guy that you would want on your side if the world were ever coming to an end, lol. But: there are times in the novel when he is just too macho. He treats Gemma as if she can't handle anything on her own, almost as if she's just some damsel in distress. He also tended to send her a lot of mixed messages when it came to their relationship. I understand that you want your character to be conflicted about falling in love with someone you're not supposed to, but sometimes he took it too far.

All in all, I thought Fallen Star had a great idea behind the story, but I'm only mildly interested in finding out how Gemma gets herself out of the mess she's in. It was a bit predictable and over the top.
