The idea behind the the kindle INDIEpendence Day event is simple—we’re celebrating our ability to write the stories we love and share them with readers. The reason why we’re giving away a kindle is also simple—without Amazon’s self publishing platform, our books (if we chose to self publish them) probably wouldn’t have reached as many readers as they are today.
Before the rise of self publishing ebooks, many self published authors had to peddle their books out of the backs of their garages or cars (and as an aside, just imagining myself trying to sell the 10 copies a day I’m currently selling to the people I see at my job, on the bus, or at school just makes me want to cry). It was hard work. It was expensive. It was time consuming. And though there were a few success stories, many, many people failed, especially if they wrote fiction. The alternative was to sell your book to a publisher and be distributed to bookstores across the country, which was great...if your book got accepted for publication.
Not every book gets picked up by a traditional publisher, and not every good writer wants to sign away the rights for their creative work. For example, I love just about everything about After Eden. While I don’t expect every reader to feel the same way, I know that many people enjoy the series—in fact, some of them enjoy it as much as I do! Still, despite the fact that my book is about a popular subject (fallen angels), is written for popular genre (young adult paranormal romance), and has received generally favorable reviews, I am 100% certain it would not have been picked up by a traditional publisher. I don’t think this is because it isn’t good (if I didn’t think it was great I wouldn’t have self published it), I just doubt a publisher would have considered a sweet yet twisted romance between two seriously psychologically scarred people and their bizarre (really bizarre) shenanigans marketable. Additionally, I wouldn’t want to change the oddball things about the book that inspired me to write the series in the first place. So before I wrote a single word, I knew that the book would have to be self published if I wanted to get it into the hands of readers.
Amazon’s self publishing platform for the Kindle made it possible for that to happen for myself and the other indie authors who are sponsoring INDIEpendence Day. I know that their stories are excellent. Ashley Girardi’s Wayward has one of the darkest, funniest, and most unique voices in the ya fantasy genre. Amanda Brice and Carey Corp have both finaled in Romance Writers of America’s renowned Golden Heart contest, which celebrates the best unpublished romance manuscripts. Penelope Fletcher is currently one of the top selling authors on Barnes & Noble, Amazon US, Amazon UK, and Smashwords period (in fact, she even has a wikipedia page!) And the woman who thought-up this event and brought us all together, Sybil Nelson, has written a fantastic adventure fantasy series for Middle Grade readers.
Writing is hard work, and is often lonely. But the incredible people I’ve met through self publishing have given me support and inspiration.
