THURSDAY'S QUESTION OF THE DAY

When I first saw this cartoon, I started cracking up - because its so true!! But at the same time, I was a little bit sad because I realized how much I'd forgotten about libraries.
Do you remember your first trip to the library - getting your first card and feeling like you owned the joint?! I swear, my first trip, I tried to take out more books than I could carry, lol.

Now that I'm a mother, I relished the day I got to take my kids to their very first trip to the library - only to realize that there seems to be more computers there than actual books. The kids were just there to get free internet access, and hardly even picked up a book. It was actually a bit of a bummer.

For me at least, I will always hold a special place in my heart for libraries. For that feeling you get when you walk in and just see row after row after row of books. I love it!

So my question to you this Thursday: do you still visit your library? Is that how you get your books?...or do you think that libraries will just slowly become a thing of the past? LET ME KNOW!!!

  1. WOW, I think the last time I visited a library was over a year ago. I was pregnant with Adam and it was easier to drive to the library for a book, than it was to the Borders 20 minutes away.

I truly do feel libraries are going to become something of the past. And that sucks because libraries are not only for books. You can do lots of things at a library and a lot of people don't take advantage of this.

  2. I haven't been to a library in a month or so. But only because I'm so backlogged with books I need to review here at home. I hope that they don't become a thing of the past, but I know that their relevance on the decline. They may end up becoming an ebook lender and maintaining a staff of one librarian and a tech support. *shudder* It's time to start praying, folks.

  3. I have always loved the library and I go ALL the time! The books are free! You can take as many as you want & did I mention, "Free?" I think that libraries are struggling with funding & with the popularity of e-readers and electronic devices it is a possibility.

But, I'm going to remain hopeful and say, no, libraries will not become a thing of the past. My library is often crowded. I see tons of kids there with their arms full of books. I see teens at the YA table. I think the pros of a library will prevail and complement technology and I don't think the public will let them become a thing of the past.

  4. I still visit my local library for getting books..I love the feeling of coming out of the library with an armful of books!

There are quite a lot of people that use our local library for the computer use though. Whether it's because they don't have internet at home or what I don't know, but it is nice that computers are there for others to use seeing as our little town doesn't have an internet cafe or anything fancy as that.

  5. I haven't been to a library in over a year to take out a book. As a teacher, I always made a point to take my classes to the local library and make sure every student had a library card. The good news is that most of the kids had a library card already, and seem to visit the local library with their parents. Hopefully the local libraries will continue to stay open and get the needed funding. In poor communities, the library is one of the only ways for some students to get books to read... going to bookstores to purchase books is simply out of the question.

  6. I go to my library probably once every two or three weeks. So far this year I have read 24 library books and I have 6 books currently checked out. I don't spend a lot of time at the library, I go online to put holds on the books (I have my library card # memorized & have holds on 50 books at the moment) and just run into my branch to pick them up when the come in or to drop them off when I'm done. I really hope the library doesn't become a thing of the past.

  7. In all honesty, libraries ARE becoming a thing of the past - although this is extremely sad to me, because as I was growing up, no other place was more magical to me than a library. I'm still a patron of my library, and visit AT LEAST once every 2 weeks. I tend to PREFER reading the written word, because I love the smell of books, the feel of the paper; to me, all of it adds character to the novel itself.

With the arrival of the e-reader, and I have nothing against patrons of the e-reader because it is most certainly far more convenient and far less space-consuming, actual physical entities of books have taken a back-seat. But to me, the library is far more than just a place for books - it is a place of COMMUNITY. For me, it is the place where the seniors from the senior center next door congregate and read newspapers, the place where the kindergartners are squealing with joy at whatever new book they've discovered, teenagers talking in hushed tones over their new crushes, and adults trying to escape into a world that doesn't translate to every-day drama. I've made many a friend at the library...and I'm sad to see their budgets cut, and their resources taken away! :(

  8. I love for the library! I would be devastated if they stopped existing. It's always been a place I go regularly.
