THURSDAY'S QUESTION OF THE DAY

When I was in Junior High School (don't ask me what grade, cause I have no clue!), I remember my English teacher making us read James and the Giant Peach. It was a decent book, and we got to watch the movie afterward (which was cool), but there was nothing special about it.

But then sometime after that, the same teacher made us read Lord of the Flies, which I just thought was one of the coolest books I had ever read. It was about kids, and cannibalism, and wild craziness. I loved it! And to this day, I still remember who it was that made me read my first "amazing" book :)

So my question to you this Thursday: what was the first book that you read in school (it could be Junior High, High School or even college), that just made you go "WOW"?

LET ME KNOW!!!

  1. This is a great question! Honestly, I'm thinking of books I read in elementary school...I'm probably dating myself but I loved Judy Blume and Paul Danziger.

  2. I don't remember, I didn't like many of the books they made us read. Only 2 books I can remember that I actually liked, one I can't remember the title something like 12 daughter and 12 sons? Ill have to search for it one day. I also liked reading the Hobbit, I had never heard of LOTR before that and this was before the movies were made. I'm curious to see show how well they make the movie.

  3. Tuck Everlasting (eighth grade?) I had read a lot of the school-required books and they were all decent. I was never one of those types to dislike a book just because I was forced to read it. But I had that WOW moment after closing Tuck Everlasting, and it still remains one of my favorites!

  4. @Midnyte Reader - who didn't love Judy Blume!!
@Kristina - I could never get through the Hobbit while I was in school. Maybe I'll try it again :)
@Another Book Junkie - I am definitely adding Tuck Everlasting to my "to read" list now!

  5. hmmm...honestly, there really weren't any books during my school days that made me go "WOW!". That's pretty disappointing. I did like the Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It was the book I enjoyed the most out of all that I was forced to read. I had to read it in 10th grade, then again in 12th grader after I switched schools. I read it all the way through both times, so it must have been good.

  6. Thanks for the post, and the awesome question. I can distinctly remember feeling that way when I first read "Little Women" in fifth grade. From there onwards, I hungrily devoured books by authors like Louisa May Alcott and Jane Austen. At high school level, I remember that book being "The God of Small Things" by Arundhati Roy.

  8. In Junior High school I still hated reading. It wasn't until I reached High School that I really started reading for enjoyment. The first book I had to read for school that made me go "wow" had to be Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger.
