Review: Overprotected by Jennifer Laurens

Ashlyn: A lonely society princess living in New York City.

Daddy hired you to be my bodyguard.

Colin: Childhood enemy, now her protector.

Daddy thought I’d be safe. He thought I’d never fall in love. He thought he could keep me forever.

Charles: obsessed with keeping her safe, keeping her his, he hires the one person he knows she could never fall in love with: Colin.

Daddy was wrong.

Having tons of money at your feet means nothing if you don't have your own personal freedom...

Many young girls know what its like to grow up with overprotective parents. The kind of parents who make you call when you get somewhere, or be home by an early curfew, or even not date until they say you can. Though it can be aggravating, deep down you know they act like that because they love you and want to always ma
ke sure you're safe. But Ashlyn's parents take the term Overprotected to a new level. She has lived her life on their terms. Doing what they want her to do, going where they want her to go, and only associating with people they approve of. The most difficult aspect of all though is that Ashlyn must have a bodyguard present at all times, something she neither accepts nor appreciates.

When her current bodyguard professes his love to Ashlyn, her fat
her fires him immediately. Now determined to find someone who can keep his daughter safe at all times, without developing a romantic attachment, her father hires Colin Brennan. Ashlyn and Colin knew each other years ago in grade school. However Colin used to taunt Ashlyn when they were children, so when she finds out he is her new bodyguard, she is less then thrilled. But Colin has changed a lot since then and grown into a handsome and all around good guy. And the more time they spend together, the more they both realize that they're not very different after all. So what happens when sparks start to fly between daddy's princess, and the man hired to protect her?

I thought this book was a refreshing, fun read. Any l
ove story that's "forbidden" or "not allowed" always draws me in. It has a good message that people can indeed change, and also that love doesn't care if its convenient or not. Love doesn't care about the past, and who is right or wrong. Love can heal and it can create new paths.

Jennifer Laurens has a way of making you want to slide into the main character's shoes, so you can feel what she is feeling. Ashlyn knew why her parents worried about her safety, but she never understood why that as she was practically an adult they still treated her like a kid. This book gives us a glimpse into a world where a girl is trying to break free of her constraints while at the same time understanding why they exist to b
egin with.

I truly enjoyed this book, and it will now sit on the bookshelf amongst my other favorites!
