Review: Delirium by Lauren Oliver

Before scientists found the cure, people thought love was a good thing. They didn’t understand that once love -- the deliria -- blooms in your blood, there is no escaping its hold. Things are different now. Scientists are able to eradicate love, and the governments demands that all citizens receive the cure upon turning eighteen. Lena Haloway has always looked forward to the day when she’ll be cured. A life without love is a life without pain: safe, measured, predictable, and happy.

But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena does the unthinkable: She falls in love.
Imagine a world where love is considered a disease. Not something that's beautiful and special that everyone wants, but something that is ugly and wrong and everyone wants to prevent it from happening to them. Well this is the society in which Lena Haloway has been raised. Love or the deliria as it is commonly referred is a illness that you get "vaccinated" against. When a person turns eighteen years old, they have a procedure done that makes it so they never fall in love or feel love for anyone. All her life Lena has grown up believing that love was nothing but a sickness. Knowing what it did
to her mother, she counted the days until she would be forever cured.

The last thing Lena ever expected was to fall in love. When she does she realizes that its not the one thing that will destroy you, but the one thing that
will save you...

With her procedure only a few months away, Lena has to be evaluated first. On the day of, she is nervous and tense and ends up saying a few things she later regrets. But something else happens that day, she meets a boy who opens her eyes and change
s her life.

I can't even begin to say how much I enjoyed this book. Its the second Dystopian novel I've read, and I am always drawn to the stories where the main character is fighting against a culture they refuse to accept. Its funny because the more and more I read, I started to become angry that everyone treated love like it
was an abomination. The idea that people are better off without love is just so insane. I kept trying to put myself in Lena's shoes, and thought about what I would do if I was her. I could never live in a world that doesn't allow me to decide for myself what is best for me. Though I don't want to give too much away, I can tell you that this is a book you should not pass up. The ending was completely mesmerizing and also leaves so many questions unanswered. This is going to be a series(hallelujah!) but the second book doesn't come out until next year sometime. So I will basically be chomping at the bit for the rest of 2011! Go out and get this book, I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

  6. It took me much longer than I had anticipated to get into this book. As in, more than 200 pages. I'm not sure why. It's not like I hated it, I just wasn't connecting to it. I came very close to giving up, but I am so glad I didn't, because the last 200 pages more than made up for what I found to be a lagging start. The ending was fantastic. Unbelievably fantastic! I had no intention of reading Pandemonium (book 2), but now I can't wait to dive into it. Outstanding job, Lauren Oliver!!
