Review: Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead

Hardcover, 594 pages
Published December 7th 2010
Vampire Academy Series #6
Rose Hathaway has always played by her own rules.

She broke the law when she ran away from St. Vladimir’s Academy with her best friend and last surviving Dragomir Princess, Lissa. She broke the law when she fell in love with her gorgeous, off-limits instructor, Dimitri. And she dared to defy Queen Tatiana, leader of the Moroi world, risking her life and reputation to protect generations of dhampir guardian to come.

Now the law has finally caught up with Rose- for a crime she didn’t even commit. She’s in prison for the highest offense imaginable: the assassination of a monarch. She’ll need help from both Dimitri and Adrian to find the one living person who can stall her execution and force the Moroi elite to acknowledge a shocking new candidate for the royal throne: Vasilisa Dragomir.

But the clock on Rose’s life is running out. Rose knows in her heart the world of the dead wants her back… and this time she is truly out of second chances. The big question is, when your life is about saving others, who will save you?

As much as I love this series, this book has to be my least favorite of them all. Every time I read any of the VA books I am always left feeling like something is missing, but always have the next book to fill in the blanks.

I am going to try my best to write this review without any spoilers.

I think that I was expecting so much from Last Sacrifice because the way Spirit Bound ended. Rose has always been a very strong character. She is not only a fighter and a great friend, she also has a huge heart and loves with everything shes got. In all the previous books she has never been the weak one. But in Last Sacrifice I found her character to be weak. I expected so much more from Rose. Don't get me wrong the book is still VERY MUCH action packed, but that strong women Rose has grown to be was lacking.

What I did like the most, besides all the action was, in each chapter little by little you get more of Dimitri's old self. Every scene that Rose and Dimitri were in either made me laugh really hard or put a smile on my face. You also get to see a different side to Adrian and I found him super funny! But for a FINAL book, there is still so many questions I have that were not answered. I actually finished reading Last Sacrifice and went online just to double check this was the final book. It just felt incomplete to me.

I cannot go much more into detail without giving away exactly why I feel this way, but I was a bit disappointed. I mean sure, most of the things I wanted to happen did happen, but I am still left with so many questions. I am hoping the spin off series answers all my questions and completes this story.

I give this book 3.5 stars since Rose does get her happy ending and because Richelle did not lack in the action. It wasn't the worse book ever, but my least favorite of them all. Looking forward to the spin off series!

  5. I can't bring myself to read this book. After the last two I lost my interest in the series, and the mixed up reviews I keep reading are not helping! Great review :)
