Review: AngelFire by Courtney Allison Moulton

Hardcover, 464 pages
Published February 15th 2011 by HarperCollins / Katherine Tegen Books
Young Adult
ISBN: 0062002325
This debut, the first novel in a trilogy, is achingly romantic, terrifying, and filled with blistering action.

When seventeen-year-old Ellie starts seeing reapers - monstrous creatures who devour humans and send their souls to Hell - she finds herself on the front lines of a supernatural war between archangels and the Fallen and faced with the possible destruction of her soul.

A mysterious boy named Will reveals she is the reincarnation of an ancient warrior, the only one capable of wielding swords of angelfire to fight the reapers, and he is an immortal sworn to protect her in battle. Now that Ellie's powers have been awakened, a powerful reaper called Bastian has come forward to challenge her. He has employed a fierce assassin to eliminate her - an assassin who has already killed her once.

While balancing her dwindling social life and reaper-hunting duties, she and Will discover Bastian is searching for a dormant creature believed to be a true soul reaper. Bastian plans to use this weapon to ignite the End of Days and to destroy Ellie's soul, ending her rebirth cycle forever. Now, she must face an army of Bastian's most frightening reapers, prevent the soul reaper from consuming her soul, and uncover the secrets of her past lives - including truths that may be too frightening to remember.

I have to be completely honest, this book was up and down for me. After watching the book trailer and hearing all the hype over it, I was super excited to read it. When I started reading Angelfire I was pulled right in. It is very easy to like Ellie and her friends. I thought Courtney did a great job developing her characters and her writing is very easy to follow.

I loved the plot and the world that Courtney created, and loved the idea of Ellie being this very old soul who is always reborn to fight off evil and protect souls. She is known to all reapers and every time she is reborn she has a guardian who works along her side. His name is Will and you can tell right from the beginning he is in love with Ellie. You can feel all the emotions Will and Ellie feel towards each other.

Though I did enjoy reading Angelfire, all the action scenes and the scenes with Will and Ellie is what really kept me reading. But there were some parts I did not like and felt were just so unrealistic.

For example, Ellie get's thrown through a window, heals very fast, and her friends and family are like "oh okay, she's fine." No hospital, not really asking questions and that sort of bothered me. Also, I found some parts to run a little slow and felt I could have done without them. Those were my only issues.

I give AngelFire 3.5 Stars out of 5.

  4. I haven't been able to decide whether or not to read this =/ It sounds good, but at the same time, I've heard that Will is kind of hot-and-cold with Ellie.

  7. I really enjoyed this book, and I never really thought about the window thing. Sometimes I can do a willing suspension of disbelief and sometimes I can't. I guess it worked for me. Anyway, great review!
