Custom Costumes

Halloween has always been my favorite holiday (yes, I even prefer it to Christmas).  I mean, dressing up, putting on make-up, and eating candy---what could be more fun?  But I never was one to buy a ‘witch in a bag’ type of costume.  For me, the best part of Halloween is shopping and searching and (finally) seeing your vision of a costume become a reality. If I could operate a sewing machine without literally stitching my hand up, I would do that, but I usually stick to pre-made pieces for safety's sake.  Luckily, when I was kid, I got to be more creative.  Every fall my mom (who is also not a seamstress) would get out her dusty sewing machine and we'd head to the fabric store to look at patterns.  I've been Belle from Beauty and the Beast, Anne of Green Gables, a fifties girl complete with poodle skirt, and an 80's pop star.  More recently I've gone as Lara Croft, Buffy, and a Japanese anime character.  The last one probably involved the most work---spray-painting knee pads and my top with chrome paint so they’d look like metal and making holsters for my various fake weapons.

Here’s my turn as a Zombie Little Red Riding Hood:

In this one I’m a stewardess after a plane crash:
This was a more difficult costume---it was a struggle trying to get the plane parts to stay on right.

Here I’m Vince Noir and my boyfriend, Brent, is Howard Moon from The Mighty Boosh.

And this is from last year when I went as the secretary Joan from Mad Men:
(Brent is the zombie robot next to me, by the way.)

And what am I wearing this year?  I'm afraid you'll just have to wait to find out.  I can't give that away!
