Review: Torment by Lauren Kate

Hardcover, 464 pages
Published September 28th 2010 by Delacorte Books for Young Readers

How many lives do you need to live before you find someone worth dying for? In the aftermath of what happened at Sword & Cross, Luce has been hidden away by her cursed angelic boyfriend, Daniel, in a new school filled with Nephilim, the offspring of fallen angels and humans. Daniel promises she will be safe here, protected from those who would kill her. At the school Luce discovers what the Shadows that have followed her all her life mean - and how to manipulate them to see into her other lives. Yet the more Luce learns about herself, the more she realizes that the past is her only key to unlocking her future...and that Daniel hasn't told her everything. What if his version of the past isn't actually the way things happened...what if Luce was really meant to be with someone else?

Torment is the second book to Lauren Kate's Fallen series. At first I was a little afraid to read Torment, because even though I liked Fallen, I wasn't too crazy about it. In fact, I was worried that Torment would be a let down. But I was SO wrong! It was much better than the first book. Fallen was like more of a introduction and Torment was the REAL story.

In Torment, you get a lot more of Daniel and Luce.Their relationship is more serious and a whole lot of making out. Luce still struggles to understand everything and find her place in the world. Daniel continues to love Luce, and struggles with himself over it. All he wants is to protect her and give her a good life. Of course it does not help that Luce continues to put herself in danger.

This was the only issue I had with the book. When they explained to her that she needed to stay low and not leave the campus, Luce would do the exact opposite. I was a little annoyed with Luce and at times found myself screaming at the book.
You also get a little more of the past characters, and I could not help but find a spot in my heart for Cam. He is basically the perfect bad guy. You also meet a lot of new characters who are funny, smart and brave.

Over all, I think that Lauren Kate delivered an excellent sequel and I cannot wait to read the third part of this series!

  4. I agree... I thought Fallen was slow, but once it got to it I could not put it down. Torment was much faster pace and more fun to read lol.

  6. I just adore the cover of this book! Since you prefer this one to the first, would you say it's possible to get into the story by starting with this than Fallen?

  7. @Audra, to be honest, No. You have to read Fallen in order to understand the relationship between Daniel and Luce. There is a lot of history with them and its all explained in Fallen.
