Review: Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks

Hardcover, 336 pages
Published September 14th 2010 by Grand Central Publishing
When a mysterious young woman named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet self-effacing, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships: one with Alex, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and two young children; and another with her plainspoken single neighbor, Jo. Despite her reservations, Katie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community and becoming increasingly attached to Alex and his family.

But even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her . . . a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Southport. With Jo's empathic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realizes that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards . . . and that in the darkest hour, love is the only true safe haven.

Nicholas Sparks, you really know how to get to my heart and bring out the tears. Another great love story!

This is a story about finding true love again and letting go of your past. Imagine thinking everything is perfect, nothing could go wrong, and then it all falls apart. You can’t help but ask yourself “Why me?” You give up on everything, and believe that nothing good can come your way. You begin to accept things for what they are and that your life will never be the way you dreamed. That is exactly how Katie felt until Jo and Alex came into her life.

Katie came to Southport, North Carolina to start fresh. She came from a horrible past and hopes to forget it all. She lives alone and does not really make new friends. The problem with living in such a small town is that, everyone notices her and is curious about her. She meets her neighbor Jo, who is not afraid to tell Katie how it is and lay out the truth. Jo and Katie begin a friendship and she begins to feel a little bit better about her move. Jo is a really good friend and always happens to be there right when Katie needs her.

She then meets Alex, the local store owner, and his two kids. Alex is curious about Katie and begins to notice her. He finds her intriguing and beautiful. But he knows Katie has a secret and doesn’t really want to push her into anything. They start out as friends and Slowly Alex and Katie find themselves falling for each other. Only, Katie is afraid to let her guard down because she knows if anyone knew the truth it would be trouble for her and them.

I found this story to be very touchy. So many women today go through exactly what Katie did. I won’t give away too much, but I felt for Katie and Alex. Safe Haven is one big ball of Suspense, Mystery and Love. I cried and laughed throughout the whole book. This is definitely another great book by Nicholas Sparks that I could see being turned into a movie. Great Story! A must read!

  2. Nicholas Sparks is one of my favorite authors. He's auto-buy for me. I read everything he comes out with. I like the fact that it doesn't have to be a happy, joy joy ending in every book.
